THE ENDLESS SHORT NOTES
« on: July 09, 2004, 12:01:28 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, you've slogged your way through the notes, you've waded through the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the endless short cows come home. 8)

JRand - I agree with Jay - you look nothing like Annette! An amazing transformation.

OOHH!!!

I realized that now that I'm out here again, I can go to Phillippe for french dip (and whatever the other place that claims to have invented it for comparison), DuPars for pancakes, try that Parisienne Cake BK raves about, Musso & Frank, etc., etc., etc..

Oh, never mind, it's not a food topic day... ;-)

As for media players... Nothing (as usual).

Goodnight.

LOL....I did mine own makeup (sounds like a great title for a play)...and since I didn't look anything like Annette to begin with...well....it wasn't difficult.   :o

I would guess that SPINOUT and THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST have Mr Theodore J. Flicker in common as writer....  And TPA also has Kathleen Hughes from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE!  If you can spot her!

I just saw Patricia Neway do At the Consulate's Office from Menotti's THE COUNSEL....I was stunned at her powerful acting....I only knew her from THE SOUND OF MUSIC soundtrack.  I love the Classic Arts night time schedule....you never know what you are going to see.

DVD - Bonjour Tristesse....I love this movie.

CD - Welcome to Woop Woop soundtrack

VHS - What's My Line from November 7 & 15, 1965.  Goodbye, Dorothy!!

It makes me tired to think about it.

CD: Barbara Cook (All I Ask of You)
DVD: Call Me Madam (Is George Sanders making the request? That's what it looks like in the cover layout.)

Reading about Walter Marks in this morning's notes made me check out Golden Rainbow. There's a CD, but it's available only through Steve and Eydie's own website. And it's $25 (US), plus $10 shipping to Canada. I think I'll pass, though I do like parts of the score.

Quiet morning here at HHW. I have nothing in the work CD player. I will probably be listening to BBC and AccuRadio.

Home CD player(s) empty at the moment. No burning or playing right now. I'm seeing Frogs tonight and Anthony is visiting a cousin on the Upper West Side so we will tape Jeopardy to see Mr. Jennings in his 27th appearance.

That's it for now.

So we will tape Jeopardy to see Mr. Jennings in his 27th appearance.

From Slate:

Self-deprecating and sweet, the blond, elfin Jennings has host Alex Trebek wrapped around his fast-on-the-buzzer finger. (One evening, the bemused host opened with, "Welcome to the Alex and Ken show," and David Letterman has an ongoing gag in which he speculates that a lovestruck Trebek is helping Jennings cheat.)

Watching Ken Jennings play is like witnessing any great athlete in top form: He's the Michael Jordan of trivia, the Seabiscuit of geekdom. Note his systematic habit of moving down the categories vertically, one by one, rather than skipping around the board. His nearly preternatural ability to land on the hidden Daily Doubles. His obscure betting tactics, which, as near as I can divine, are inspired by an obsessive-compulsive need to end each day's winnings with a round figure. His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers (which, this being Jeopardy!, are of course phrased as questions.) If the topic is a foreign country, he'll answer in that country's accent, and in answer to one clue about hip-hop music, the ultra-white Ken memorably responded, "What is rap, yo?"

Note: The GOLDEN RAINBOW CD mentioned above (as well as WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN also sold only on the Steve and Edie website) are CD-ROMS and not playable on all CD Players... plus it will take you forever to get off the Steve & Edie Spam list.

***

DVD - NIGHT AND DAY, the only movie in which Eve Arden is less than her usually wonderful self.  Actually, with the exception of Mary Martin, it's worse than I remembered.

CD - OBC of HOT SPOT starring Judy Holliday with music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Martin Charnin (assisted on one song by BK's good friend Steve Sondheim); OBC of ANKLES AWEIGH with Betty and Jane Kean; and the studio recording of archy and mehitibal with a pre-Dolly Carol Channing.

VHS - An ABC documentary about how dogs act when their masters are not home.

Good morning. I woke up more tired than I was before going to bed. What a waste of six hours!
Off for a walk to wake me up -- although I'm tempted to crawl back to bed.

DR Ben, please let us know what you think of THE FROGS. Since ASSASSINS is definitely closing on July 18 (less than a week before I had tickets for it, sobbing quietly), that leaves me with Saturday night open to see something else. I had wondered about THE FROGS and also thought I might venture to FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. My traveling companions will probably opt for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS if it's still running. Its grosses, and those for CAROLINE and WONDERFUL TOWN, are looking quite anemic, much more so than ASSASSINS. Just my luck!

Ken from Jeopardy is beginning to get boring... but somehow I still watch with my ENTIRE family every night to see if he'll continue on.  That's a lot of people crowded around a tv screen literally screaming out answers in hopes of not being labelled an "ignorant youth" by my trivia-king father.

The time he got the dishwasher final jeopardy answer (question?) a few weeks ago, I knew Ken was something special. :)

My friend Steve bid on and just won a dress once worn by Ethel Merman. He says he's now looking for shoes to match.

Has anyone leaked approximately when Ken will lose?

I know a few weeks ago the paper here said that his run was over (and I think it said it taped in February).  So I guess he will be ending eventually.

Media check:

CD: DHAANI by an Indian pop group called STRINGS. I am addicted to this CD which I just picked up the other day.

VHS: Several 1930s James Cagney films taped off of TCM.

This weekends Bollywood movie:

CHINA TOWN (1962) An action thriller starring Shammi Kapoor. Mr. Kapoor is the gayest actor I have ever seen in my life! LOL! I do not know how he became an Indian matinee idol, but he was very, very popular! But if that man is straight I will eat my hat! LOL! Also in this film is my favorite Hindi femme fatale Helen! She is a doll and her dance numbers are always a joy to watch!

DR DiT - Why bother?  Ethel's shoes never matched HER dress???

Thanks MATTH....I remembered Peggy's name from SOM but had it on the wrong album.  I had never heard her sing anything else, in fact had never heard anything from this Menotti opera, and I was stunned!  She was a great singer AND actress in this part!

GOLDEN RAINBOW.....I love the overture and a couple of the songs....FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE is a cute duet/dance with Eydie & Steve and the boys.  And Eydie does that irritating slide up to a screech that is such a favorite with her....  The description of the show in William Goldman's book THE SEASON is a great read!  He talks about its problems on the road and it's New York run.

Jrand53. That is hilarious. I'm going to post the dress that Steve got. It comes with a certificate of authentication, but I wonder - it's a bit classier than the one in your pic.

This - posting a pic - is a first for me. I'm working from DR George's thorough instructions from the other day.

Lovely dress!

Red velvet shoes or black shoes will be fine....and yes when Ethel wore THAT dress, she was a bit classier.

Ethel was allergic to roses, ya know!

Much nicer than the schmatte she's wearing in the first picture.  That one looks like it was made from an overrun of beach umbrella fabric.
