Thanks for the good wishes from everyone!

I ended up buying two 24 packs of small bottles of water at the supermarket, but when I stopped at Rite Aid I checked and they had gallon bottles of distilled water (not spring water) --I guess that's okay.

I got home and realized I forgot to check to see if they had ice!  So I guess I'll venture back out before it get s really bad.

Distilled water is good.

Success!  I found 3 bags of ice.  They fit in my freezer for now --in the (apparently inevitable) power outage I can put two of them in my coolers.

That great!

The weather's been pretty much the same in my neck of the woods in the South of Jersey for the past 12 hours--blustery wind and a constant pouring rain.  While I know it's going to get much worse (core of the storm will pass just south of here), I'm not overly worried.  My house is brick and the roof structure was reinforced a few years ago when I put on a new roof.  If anything, I'll keep an eye on the aluminum awning and bay window in the front of the house (fortunately, the wind seems to be blowing at the back.)

Thanks for the update.  Try and keep us posted.

What drove me crazy while driving back and forth to the store was seeing how many households were not hurricane-proofed.  People had trash cans and recycling containers out on the curbs, large halloween decorations on their lawns, chairs and rockers and planters on porches.  I saw one woman blowing a huge pile of leaves into the street gutter, where they will most likely help clog up the storm drains. A house on the next block from me had a huge pile of junk piled for trash pick-up (the township sent out phone messages informing residents that trash pick-up has been cancelled this week.)  And believe it or not, I saw one family setting up a yard sale!  What is wrong with these people!

Have you been receiving the same warnings other areas have?

Last night, one of the newcasts was reporting live from Rehoboth Beach and they were saying how serious the situation was becoming.

And despite all the dire warnings on the news and all the announced business and school closings, the HR manager at my place of work sent out an email last night stating that the office would be open this morning be cause the building landlord saw no reason to close it.

I sent my manager an e-mail first thing this morning informing him that I was "working at home". Turned out that he had the same idea, as did everyone on my team.

At 11:30, the HR manager sent out a message that everyone who came in had to leave at noon.

And so it goes...

I'm glad you stayed home.

What I learned on TV:

Sandy just sank a replica of HMS Bounty.

Oh no.  I read this morning that the crew had abandoned ship.

I just found the story - apparently they were sailing from CT to FL -  why they didn't dock somewhere with this  storm coming is beyond comprehension -  14 were rescued but two of the crew are missing

I'm shocked any ships were out there.

In other news, I just spent more than 30 minutes on the phone with the travel agent who's setting up the England trip for Richard's seminary.  The basics of our trip are now complete.  We will stay with the group in the Russell Square area of London before the week in Norwich and near Westminster Abbey for 4 days on our own afterwards.

It sounds nice.

Electricity has not blinked here yet, but I wouldn't doubt that we'll lose it sometime in the coming hours.  I'm keeping my phone and iPad on the chargers just in case.

Wind is picking up...

Good idea.  I have a friend in NY, the one that survived Irene, said she may lose her cell phone as some towers in the area have blown down.

Yes.  I can't imagine anything more she can do to be prepared.  She won't leave though.  Had she not been home during Irene the damage to her house would not have been repairable.

Yesterday, inspired by BK, I went to Subway to get subs for Vixdad and myself -- he had a club but I had a turkey with swiss, bacon and red onion,  which they grilled and then added  lettuce and lots of avocado

I ordered footlongs -  we ate half yesterday and the other halves today for lunch

Our main local tv stations are the same as Philly, so we have had the same advanced warnings for days.  Plus, the township has been sending out recorded phone messages.  There's no excuse for these people.

I've heard that most of the local shelters are accepting pets, too.

Yeah. They don't do that in Florida, as I recall. I couldn't imagine not being able to evacuate without J.B. Yes, things may be different for a bird, but pets are family to many of the people who own then.
