I enjoyed the first half very much. Some things are better than the William Wyler film and some things suffer from the BBC's smaller budget, like the battle at sea. I read Lew Wallace's novel around 1963, so I have absolutely no memory of the book, and I don't remember if some of the material in this adaptation was in the novel and cut from the 1959 screenplay, like Emperor Tiberius' treachery and mind games with Messala's father against Quintus Arius (Ray Winstone in BBC, Jack Hawkins in 1959). I don't remember Messala's father being in the 1959 film at all.
