We all have opinions about everything. Some choose to share and others choose to not.  My biggest issue with politics is when they drag religion into campaigns or laws.  Somewhere in the constitution is says something about the separation of church and state, but some politicians seem to forget that and force their religious beliefs into their campaigns and therefore, getting the "church" vote.  I feel many people forget to see the facts, the history, and the actual work (or not) of the previous presidents of this country and tend to go with what they are hearing now, even though previous presidents have proven that those ways or whatever don't work.  Stupid mistakes that have cost our country war, deficits and the like are there in black and white.  If you like these things, good for you, although I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would, and I'm sad to think that there are people that want the politicians in their bedroom, or do they?  This is suppose to be the land of the free, but some politicians are doing their best to make it the land of "How they think it should be".

I don't get mad at people's opinions or their choices, what I get irritated about is how stupid people can be that they want these things to happen in our country again - continuation of war, deficits, Christian "values" in a country that has freedom of religion, etc.  You really can't take what you want here, you get it all or nothing.  Be sensible.

Thank you for listening.

Back from a great grantwriters' meeting and a nice Starbucks chat with Sue.  She and I were reference librarians together and are both very glad to be retired.

From DR Chas:

Peanut butter filled donut!

BTW, is Stan's still there?  I did see a small sign on one side of the building.

You must have missed my talking about Stan's.  When he isn't too busy we stop and talk to him, he was even there on Christmas morning.  He loves his work.

Stan's apple fritters are still my favorite.  Keith is torn between them and his new favorite, the peanut butter filled ones.

http://www.stansdoughnuts.com/

Thank you for that info and the link!

Stan's is one of the great institutions, to be sure.  I will never forget how, back in the days when Westwood was still Westwood in all its glory, at the end of the night when you could drop by the window at Stan's and take home a large bag holding a week's worth of donuts for a dollar.  Well, week's worth for a normal person.  Weekend, maybe, for the likes of moi.

Apple fritters.  Yes!

Peanut butter filled.  Yes!

And of course glazed, my number one always.

Did Stan's also have hot dogs during the day?  Or am I remembering another business who shared that corner building?  Could be wrong, but I'd swear I remember sitting at a little counter in there in the afternoon, eating a hot dog and having a donut.

I mostly purchased them one at a time while on my break at the Bruin Theater.  While Stan still had the best Orange Julius stand in town I would spend what little money I had on a Julius before getting a doughnut.

And I am off to meet Jonathan for dinner at Joe Allen.  I hopethis horrendous nor'easter they're predicting is not as dreadful as they're warning us.  I worry about my Dublin driends flying in, and I'd like to see Rosemary Ashe at some point this week before she retrns to London,

Wait, that's it then!  An Orange Julius stand.  Thank you!!

Reading the web site now.  The signage in that picture on the "History" page brings the magic right back.  There's a good chance I have a color print or slide taken back then.

The large window on the corner used to be the Orange Julius stand.  I often got a hot dog with my Julius for lunch or dinner.  If you look through the window now you can see the back of the doughnut counter.

Yes, a hot dog and Orange Julius, and the donuts.  Wonderful.

If you reminisce with Stan he might give you a sticker with a photo of Stan's from 1964 when it was established.

I took photos of our sticker & couldn't get a clear photo.  Silly me, I found it on his link.  The middle awning was where we purchased our Julius's & hot dogs.  You can see the hot dog sign.

Bruce why didn't you knock on the rude woman's window & point to the line of cars she was blocking?

Because I would have been much too bad of a boy.

The first memory I have of ever having a hot dog was at the Orange Julius stand on the southwest corner of Pico and Robertson, sometime back around the time MAD magazine first hit the stands.  There was a newsstand next door where I got my MAD issues (in comic book form) and the a Julius and hot dog with mustard and onions.  I was probably six at the time.

Watching a movie I've never seen before because I'll obviously be able to write more informed liner notes after I've actually seen it :)  It's pretty good.  That's the good thing about amazon prime - you can watch any movie you want for free on their site.

Which year(s) did you work at the Bruin?

Hmmm, Keith started first & we were dating which means I began in '66.  I worked there until after my car accident in '68(?) when I went on disability.  I had every intention of continuing to work until the day I plopped on the floor behind the candy counter & didn't get up until intermission.;D  When I mentioned that to my father he ran some blood work & I apparently was EXTREMELY anemic on top of my back & neck pain.

Gosh, it seemed like a worked there much longer.  Time really did move slower back then ;)

Was it outside or inside of a drug store?  I have a memory of my mother taking me to a counter for my first Orange Julius.  I thought it was in that area, I'm vague on the location, pretty sure it was a drug store, positive it was a Julius.

Didn't know about that.  Even though my mother had a cousin in Chicago we never went, to my great regret.

They had a window to the street, but yes, inside a drugstore.  I think it went away in the late 1950s.

Thank you.  After that, until San's I don't recall having a good Julius.  After Stan's I never did. Stan's were so good because he doubled the ingredients or added something extra.  You have to ask him.   My sister and I used to make our own with ice cream, even better.
