I love Capra's "Lost Horizon".   I, too, think a place of peace and harmony would be horrific longterm.  It's sort of like the vision of heaven I was raised to believe in...a place where I'd be on my knees worshipping God for eternity.  Nothing else.  Just that.

I've never been able to sort out why that would be "heaven".

Interesting reviews of the "Drood" revival. I have always loved the show, which I saw in previews, but there had been some critical backlash within the last few years. Glad these largely wonderful pieces have gone back to the opinion that the show is as much fun as ever.

What strikes me about this revival is that, for a change, director Scott Ellis allowed the material to do it's work and didn't layer the production with some ill-fitting "vision", resulting in a successful show.

Yeah, thankfully he saw no need to improve the show with his vision.

Elmore's favorite, S. Suskin, managed to mangle one of the song titles, calling it "Nightfall" instead of "Moonfall."

Mr Suskin is a good writer and theatre critic. I think he needs to broaden his narrow musical perspective.

Oy!  DR ELMORE, I somehow missed that you had Finian's Rainbow to your credit.  I've always been sorry I didn't get to that production.

And the word of the day is: DISBOSOM!

I think this word can only be said out loud by Miss Jayne Mansfield with her patented squeal and giggle.

It sounds to me like something Mrs. Slocombe (Mollie Sugden in "Are You Being Served?") might say to a young woman in the dressing rooms if said young woman were trying to fill out the front of a new dress that didn't quite fit.

Mrs. S.:  "My dear, I don't think this is quite right for you.  Kindly disbosom yourself and let us try another frock."

ROTFLMAO!! ;D

I have both CD releases of the original cast album AND the vinyl album, and I've seen it live twice here in Olympia.  I love this show! :D

Return travel vibes for DR DOUG R

Thank you DR Jrand 61 and DR Ginny. It was touch and go but I'm back home. Many flights were cancelled from Spain and other countries due to public service worker strikes. Saw strikers battling with police in the center of Madrid. My plane was only delayed an hour and that was because the wheel was found to be damaged. Fortunately Spanish air traffic controllers did not join in the strike despite having gone on strike before, even though it's illegal for them to strike.

Mixing it up to be a cherry limeade flavor.

That was a whole lotta notes on LOST HORIZON.  Might very well be one of the best summations we're likely to read on this film.

I wish I could remember why I didn't go to it when it opened.  What kept me away in March 1973?  I have no idea now.  My first memory of seeing any part of it was on some horrible local TV channel in Cincinnati while on a visit to my folks.  It was commercial-interrupted and pan-and-scanned to death, and the first musical number to appear after we tuned to the channel was, I kid you not, Question Me an Answer.  I sat there, horrified, but unable to look away.

Years later, with a borrowed laserdisc (the good one), I watched it and was somewhat amused, but it wasn't until a couple of years ago when we had a good clear DVD, and I had a good screen to watch it on, that it finally made some sense and started becoming -- dare I say it? -- "lovable".  Now I could appreciate the good in what I was seeing, and it even seemed I had "grown into" the music -- most of the songs, and the score itself, were quite lovely.  Like MR BK says, it is a bad film rife with bad decisions.  But it is eye and ear candy of a fairly high order which can reward one when taken in the right dose at the right time.  And even so, I know that simply won't work for a lot of people.  But I'm glad it finally did for me, because the film can finally claim its rightful place on the List of Guilty Pleasures.

I have never seen this movie  now I am intrigued.... intrigued I tell ya!
