My niece was very excited that someone else in her class celebrates Chanukah.  So I asked which one of the girl's parents was Jewish. And she thinks neither.  Is that common for a family to celebrate a holiday like this? She said she thinks they are from England.

RIP, Dave Brubeck.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/06/arts/music/dave-brubeck-jazz-musician-dies-at-91.html?hp

I read that this morning. :'( A couple of years ago, my sister and I took our dad to see Dave Brubeck perform at Seattle's Jazz Alley.  My dad never thought that he'd ever get a chance to see him perform live and it was a fabulous concert.

I know a small number of Christian families who celebrate Hanukkah because of the miracle at the center of the story. They may not do it for eight nights, but they light a menorah and eat fried foods and chocolate gelt.

A bit sluggish after a big meal and drinks last night. I had garlic mushrooms, sirloin steak and fries followed by chocolate ganache (which really I could have done without, being too sweet for my liking). Now off to work.

Are fries anything like chips?

Thank you to DRs TCB and Vixmom for their nice comments about our DN/G Lauren's certification.  In addition to securing her professional future, yesterday's news provided me some much-needed inspiration for a Christmas present for her.

You're buying her a sports team?

There'll be a change in the weather---60's today, 40's tomorrow.

From 50 today, we're going down to nearly 20 tonight!

Is it terrible that I would have been much more appreciative of a Kohl's  or Target gift card?

(or 2 Broadway tickets?!!)

Not at all.  That's the direction people SHOULD be thinking in, on gift giving occasions like that.  Too bad!   :)

Today at work I received 2 very  expensive gifts  from one of my clients - a watch and a wallet

the young woman (the ones in their 20's & 30's) were besides themselves with envy and admiration ....

not only do I not have a CLEW  about this apparently latest MUST HAVE  designer - I think the watch is ugly and the wallet is ordinary and less practical and useful than my $3 nylon wallet

I feel like an ingrate....

Vixmom, one word:  regift.

;)

Seconded.

No, wait!  I meant:

This.

Perhaps their ugliness is the reason you received these gifts.  ;)

Last night caught the last 15 minutes or so of Taxi Driver. I knew what was going to happen, but I forgot how violent it was and was somewhat jarring. Blood color was toned down originally so not to get an X rating. For the blu-ray release they tried to final the original negative to make it more red but the footage was missing. It is still a very potent film all these years later.

The  girls thought they were beautiful --- I guess it's like the Coach bags -- I never saw the attraction there either  ---

It was a very generous gift and I know he put a lot of thought into it -  apparently these are THE watch  to have this year --- I just ain't got no taste and style

Well, I got my nap.  I'd mostly forgotten about my lack of sleep last night, feeling fine through the afternoon, then I had a little food and sat down to watch a movie.  Made it through about ten minutes before I found myself nodding off.  This couldn't have been much later than 6:30 pm.  I went to my bed and laid down, intending to catch a quick nap, and suddenly it was 10:45 pm.

Tonight (in a few minutes, actually), I'm leaving to see a local production of Nuncrackers at Capital Playhouse.  They've finally hired a new managing director and it's none other than Lauren O'Neill, who played Yoni in TAO's production of BK's very own The Brain From Planet X!  I'm sure that she'll be a great asset to the company. :D

And I went to school with Lauren's mother.  And we are still friends

Vixmom, I can easily relate to your sense of practicality, but some people feel that "practical" gifts are a bit insulting, that gifts should be a splurge. I wonder if this client has observed how hard you work and wanted to treat you to something you wouldn't buy yourself. (Well, he was right there!)

Michael Kors is indeed a very popular designer these days. I bought myself a Michael Kors handbag a couple years ago after much shopping. It was actually a good value. And I am NOT a trendy type.
