RE: the Jews on Broadway show. I noticed it in my tv listings but didn't watch it.  For BK, you should have just looked up your PBS station (but maybe the DR did not mention it was on PBS). Glad you were able to find it. Many of PBS shows are listed as Great Performances... I even think Downtown Abbey is listed (on my tv) as something similar.

It is six degrees this morning.....so I think I will stay indoors today.

I read BELOVED INFIDEL.....and saw the movie once when Rona Barrett's name was attached to an afternoon movie series....and in one segment she did a Movie Star Update that was interesting.

Yes these FOX movies look very distinctive.....I like Deborah Kerr....but I don't LOVE her....something about her face is strange....and her figure was never played up in any way other than ordinary.....or didn't seem to be....but she is fine.....

I feel the same way about Deborah Kerr, DR Jrand62.

I thought pbs.org might have the Broadway show, but there's only an excerpt. Each episode of Downton Abbey will be shown in its entirety after it airs.

But I still like her better than Miss Greer Garson in most instances.

Good morning, all! Jan 2 has landed, the emails and phone calls have begun, and I had lots of business ro attend to this morning. Thank God nothing is too urgent, but the Man from Philadelphia likes to send long emails.

Today, I have some banking - my union pension has now kicked in - and a trip to the post office. Also, a couple of emails.

I fell in love with Deborah Kerr at the age of ten when I saw THE KING & I.  I think she's wonderful in it and THE INNOCENTS. As to the overrated Greer Garson, who stinks as Lizzie Bennett and Mrs Miniver, I'm better.

Ah....well DR JOHN G and DR ELMORE - I have to agree with you about GG - even though she once sent me a nice autographed photo....

I like her in a movie called HER TWELVE MEN....but other than that....not so much.

I do remember once she had Walter Pidgeon were presenting an award....a Golden Globe or something....I don't think it was an Academy Award.....it was late in the program and as Greer started to speak, Walter said:  "Now...we're going to hear something.....hurry up dear, don't take all night, I have an early call tomorrow...."

And Greer looked at him and said disdainfully..."Hmmm....television, no doubt..."

LOL.....

I am reading the two part biography of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick....just starting on Part Two.  It is fascinating, but not as personally incisive as the book by Albert Goldman.

I liked the anecdote, DR JRand62!  Greer played Auntie Mame in either the national tour or Broadway as a Russell replacement, I don't remember now, but I cannot imagine it.

Here's a Greer Garson story from my memoir:

"Another story writer Geroge Froeschel told me took place at the wrap
party for MRS. MINIVER. He was dancing with the picture’s star, Greer Garson, when she
leaned close and whispered into his ear, 'George, if you ever write me
another terrible script like this one, I’ll have the studio fire you.'

"I wonder if, after Ms. Garson won the Academy Award, she apologized."

Elmore and I do disagree on Miss Greer Garson's Elizabeth Bennett, the only role in which I find her endearing, almost human. But I'm loving the stories about her.

I like GG in P&P, too,  DR John G..  And I liked her Laugh-In appearances, too.  (She must have had some kind affiliation with NBC in the 60s', though what it might have been I can't recall at the mo'...)

I really loathe that version of P&P: wrong era, coy simplified retelling, five ladies too old trying to remember their virginity, no sense of Austen's tne, and giving Edna Mae Oliver a comic ending! Absolutely trashed Austen.

A Question for BK...so, what do you do with all those screeners that you get?

We're supposed to destroy them, but I haven't yet, just in case I want to watch one again.  They say they're watermarked in some way that can be traced.

I also found much to like in  the Jews on Broadway show last night, though I thought Joel Grey's voiceover was kind of elementary school teacher-ish.  But I loved hearing the older pros speak (Laurent's Merman/Styne Seder story was wonderful!)  Also loved the brief brazeness of playing the THREEPENNY OPERA overture against the sound of Nazi goosesteps.

I only wish that the show spent some time on how current B'way has been losing the Jewish influence.  It seemed to point to WICKED as an example of the legacy, but even with Schwartz and Holzman as the creators, I think that show falls more under the Waspy-Disney umbrella.

ASK BK:

This is my first time to be around as a new book is begun, which puts me right in the mood to get into another one.  I've read, as of course you know, the two memoirs and the three Kritzers.  What do you suggest should be the next one?  Actually, make it two.

I think the Hofstetter series might be fun.  The first two are Murder at Hollywood High School and Murder at the Grove - it's best to read the first one first, but after that they don't have to be read in order, and you might like Murder at the Hollywood Historical Society as your second one.  They're very quick reads and Hollywood Historical Society introduces one of my favorite characters I've ever written, who returns in Murder at the Masquers.
