TOD:

When we were kids, my younger brother had a Pete Pan costume, and he used to run around the house, yelling "You can fly!"

Thankfully, he never tested it by jumping off the roof.

Chester, our new pooch, has his second day of school today.

During this past week of study, he has learned "stay," and "down," however he seems to do it only when he want to.

Miss Saigon auditions are today.  I got a lovely email from the executive director wishing us well today, which I was quite taken by.  It's a important show for me as well as the director.  Sentimental in a lot of ways for me, also.  Even though I played it in 2006, this time around, the stage manager is my best friend and it's one of the first shows we saw together.  I hope we find the people we need.

TOD:

I also grew up with the MM TV version.  In b&w since we didn't get a color TV until '68 or so, but the last year it was broadcast ('65 or '66?) we were at my aunt's house and I got to watch it in Living Color!  I was mesmerized.

I remember being taken to see the Disney animated PP.  While I enjoyed it, it never was a huge favorite of mine.

For a hoot (and for $10 seats in the balcony), a friend and I went to the Sandy Duncan revival in '79.  Our intent was to make fun of the whole thing, but like BK said-- there's no fighting the show (or Sandy Duncan, for that matter.) By time they did "Ugh-A-Wah" we were completely won over.  Christopher Hewitt was Mr. Darling/Capt. Hook and he was wonderfully hammy.

DR John G mentioned the Mia Farrow TV version.  I do remember watching it but I don't remember if it was the stage show or not.

do they still have the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland or Disney world?

I believe this one is alive and well in both parks, DR vixmom.

(I love those old rides that absolutely EXUDE charm.)

Saturday Question for BK:  how is the stage show depicting Tinkerbell these days?  They used a laser back in 79 (which was state-of-the-art back then) but it had that herky-jerky effect to it.  I was wondering if the effect has been improved since.

Any chance of a recording coming down the pike, DR Druxy?

As it happens, I've just ordered the complete Rathbone SHERLOCK HOLMES films on Blu-ray -- something I've been wanting for a while but had kept on the back burner till I found a good price.

I would hope so, but there is nothing in the works right now.

Of course, the Mary Martin version was a memorable part of my childhood.

I never saw Sandy Duncan---wish I had.

Cathy Rigby is amazing!  The first time I saw her my mouth was open with amazement!  Not to mention Brent as Captain Hook, who clearly is having the time of his life, as BK said.

My favorite song from the show, sung wonderfully by Hugh Panaro:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBoKoxy_v-Y

This is from an appearance of Hugh's at a nearby high school is Springfield, VA a few years ago as part of their Arts program.   I was there--he was great.  I think he sang 4 songs as well as did a Q&A. He talked a little about his touring with Barbra Streisand in Europe.   He also signed photos of himself afterwards.  He was very friendly.

The Mia Farrow version of Peter Pan has a wholly original score by Bricusse and Newley - wonderful opening number but the rest is completely mediocre.  I recommend highly the Peter Pan album I produced, where we tell the story using songs from every version.

Yes, I shall have to dust off that CD and play it today.

It's one of my favorites of all I've produced - great cast, great songs, and some truly unknown and wonderful gems, including the cut song from the Mary Martin version, When I Went Home - it's now just a short monologue in the show and one can see why it was cut, but it's a beauty.

Good morning, all! Actually, good afternoon.

I slept in until 11:30, debating whether or not I wanted to get up and face the day or wait for Sunday. So here I am. I will spend the day working on my taxes.

Depending on my aches and pains, I will see a readng of a new musical"I Capture the Castle," based on Dodie Smith's wonderful novel, My friend Peter Foley composed the score.

Mia Farrow as Peter Pan

and Danny Kaye as Captain Hook.

It's the entire show (1 hour and 41 minutes) on YouTube

From Bruce:
Quote
Jane, I saw the film version of Headhunters - very enjoyable - I'm sure I wrote about it here.  I have a few of Nesbo's Brit first editions (the true firsts in English).

I don't remember seeing your books, too bad.

My brother also liked the film version.  I decided I wanted to read it first.  I'm going to add the movie to my list of films to see some day, more for Keith than for me.

DR ChasSmith, I did not work with McGlinn on the Samuel French materials for PETER PAN; that occirred after our falling out in 2002.  I understand it was a typical McGlinn situation: finish the product, do no proof reading, submit a set of materials full of errors, take the check, and burn another bridge.

So anyhoo, moving right along...

I just listened -- and paid attention, wasn't puttering around doing anything else -- to the PETER PAN album.  I've had it since way before I knew any of you fine people here (it even has a water-damaged booklet; I think I picked this one up at a library sale or some such), so this was a time to reconnect with it, study the liner notes, and enjoy it anew.

WONDERFUL!!  A great put-together of material, wonderful orchestrations by one DR ELMORE, and just one delight after another.  And the song Guy Haines sings is beautiful.

I don't think I ever knew quite what a collaboration the Mary Martin musical really was.
