That clip of Al Jolson is astounding, DR John G. A whole different world.
But that was the 1930s. I was touched by the remnants of that world in the early 1960s, when the men in the (all white, naturally) First Christian Church of Fort Lauderdale would put on the occasional minstrel show. I kid you not. I also kid you not that a certain young church pianist/organist (age 12 at the first one of these) was blackfaced along with the rest of them. I still have the programs, but I don't remember us ever having any pictures of it. Believe me, I wish there was one somewhere.
And we thought nothing of this. Even then, it was obviously still considered a form of entertainment that was all in good fun. There were two of these put on while we were there -- in 1961 and 1963. One little sidebar event augments what little memory I had of them. The JFK assassination happened on the day of the show, and the church tastefully rescheduled that Friday evening's minstrelsy to the following week, holding a little memorial service/vigil instead. I am not making this up.
