TOD: I have to go with the texting. I rarely get text messages, and when I do, they irritate me for some reason. My nephew started texting me during church yesterday. Not cool.

DR ELMORE and DR JOHN G mentioned Anna Karenina yesterday - in a coincidence, I had watched the Vivien Leigh version of said novel on Friday evening...it is so very good.

Of course I enjoy the Greta Garbo version - I think Fredric March is such a fine Vronsky.....and Leigh's Vronsky -  Kieron Moore - is kind of a lump.....but maybe that's the point....

There was a special feature on the life of Tolstoy which I found very interesting and entertaining as well.  I did not know anything about his background.....  And I didn't know anything about The Decemberists - I need to catch up on my Russian history.

I must drive my car in,carefully, to the Hyundai shop this morning. When I was in Portland yesterday for my brother's party something happened to my seat belt, and now it will not work....I was just certain that because I was not seat belted in on my drive home that this trip would the the one in which I am in an accident and have a horrible, gory death! I was quite cautious. And I felt very naked not being buckled in.

Recollections of those horrid driver's ed videos like Signal 31, flashed through my head as I drove.

One of my two drivers' ed teachers was also one of the coaches, who had been in a bad car wreck in which part of his brain was supposedly exposed. I guess he was sentenced to teach us as some form of deterrent.

The other teacher, Doc Adams, had been a drivers ed instructor for decades. Then he took me out driving in post-Thanksgiving shopping traffic. He retired after that semester.

and speaking of those horrid videos from driver's ed, like Signal 31...do you suppose they got releases from the victim's families to use that footage of bodies being pulled out of wrecks and such. I cannot imagine that being done today at all.

Of course if you look at old newspapers of the 40s and 50s, they seemed to have no problem with showing photos of dead bodies from all sorts of accidents and murders, not to mention going into graphic details in the accompanying article.

Sensibilities have changed a lot since then, I think.

TOD:  Portable cell/mobile phones.

I think cars should have them built in, but I absolutely hate, loathe and despise folks walking down streets and aisles yakking away at the top of their lungs, shushing folks in elevators "because I'm on the phone", etc.  And despite laws and hefty fines, not a day goes by that I don't see someone talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving.

I also hate being with folks who constantly text/talk while driving distances.

It was my first day ever on the road, and I was in Christmas traffic near the mall. Oy.

We're docked in Falmouth.   My friend and I walked around the area near the port.  There were different excursions and activities you could sign up for but we opted not to do that.

The bridal party and some others are at a resort for the day.  The weather is partyl cloudy and probably in the low 80's.

We had quite a rough ride last evening!  The travel agent who arranged everything is on the cruise and said that she's been on many cruises but had never had such a bumpy ride.  Unfortunately, the bride-to-be got sick last night, as did my great-niece.   I hope they were able to go to that resort this morning.

I bought an internet card in Falmouth that I'm able to use on one side of the ship (facing the town).  I can use it till we leave this evening.  Otherwise it's 65-75 cents a minute on the ship!

A well-written and non-snarky article about why

Smash

doesn't work for me and apparently others. I know Smash has fans (including some people on this board) but give me Slings and Arrows anytime.

I think Howard Sherman nails it.

Best wishes for good heatlh to Bruce.

It might seem harsh, but maybe you should inquire about a person's health before inviting/admitting hime/her into your home.

When I first began working for the County, my agency's director's "policy" was to come into work even if sick.  She felt that if you got dressed and came to work, you'd feel better and be able to put in a full day's work.

The result, of course, was that several others would then get sick and more people would be out than would have been the case if the sick person had stayed home.

County policy has changed substantially inasmuch as we are encouraged to stay home if we feel sick so that we DON'T infect others.

Thanks, Ben. This comment said it all

“You live the reality, and what’s on screen isn’t that.”

Journalism shows, "Lou Grant" included, are so far from reality that they're all laughable on so many different levels. Yet, who would want to see someone sitting at a keyboard and writing for more than two seconds? It's visually boring.

I'm up after the predictable horrid evening trying to sleep and failing miserably.  When my throat feels weird that's the way it is.  I'm sure I did sleep at some point but it sure doesn't feel like it.

This could still go either way and I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse, although my throat still feels weird.

BK, I assume you are not talking about the Bruce Dern BLACK SUNDAY FROM 1977 OR 1978.

I am not BK, but:

Nope, the Mario Bava Italian/International horror film with Barbara Steele from the early 1960s.
