Thursday morning greetings!

SNOW AND ICE predicted for us starting at 9 p.m.

Hope it holds off here until after my book group friends have left tonight.  Don't want them to have to ski down our steep driveway!

I watched SKYFALL last night.

Javier Bardem is the best Bond villain of them all.  He should have been Oscar nominated for this role.  He was terrific!

I loved the opening shot that introduced him.

TOD:

Mrs. Patricia Borgstrom, my high school drama teacher, was the first one to really believe in my abilities and encourage me to pursue my show biz dreams.  She gave me the lead in the senior play (A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER), which was the high point of my high school years.

Today is another City Center day with Joshie. I've got a couple of things to take him and they're in my bag. I hope I can run quickly through the rest of this ballet and be out of there no later than 3pm.

I'm very supportive of City Center Encores and over the years gave to them when we did well, and of course their powers-that- be include some friends, as you know elmore - and they've been helpful at giving me information about where some of the people who have been plaguing me are located (like Connecticut rather than other states, it turned out, who really knew?)

But I was surprised to now see that their regular official Encores videographer (at least for the past five or six shows) is none other than the company Reel Time, which is 100% owned by, get this, Jonathan Frank, the very person who has been plaguing me who filed a weird legal complaint to have my legal license taken away on a very bizarre technicality,   As they say in Disney World, it's a small friggin' world after all.  :(

Something else in the notes that struck me --

I HATE it when somebody decides that something that's happened at a certain time of year, for many years, should be changed.  The Oscars, for me, even when living in Los Angeles, were a "springtime" event.  They took place as the seasons and one's moods were in transition.  Living in the northeast, that sense became all the more heightened, and it lent something a little extra to the fun of that awards night.

Another case in point:  the Super Bowl.  I don't care about football at all, but I've certainly been around a lot of people and had close friends for whom that's a very exciting event, and I even enjoyed taking in the fun at a couple of Super Bowl parties back in the day.  Somehow, the third weekend or whatever it was in January was just perfect for that, and its regular appearance provided one more little measure of comfort and predictability in one's routine.  When I lived in Redondo Beach, I quickly learned to enjoy the tradition of the "Super Sunday" South Bay 5K, or 10K, or whatever it was, going right past my apartment along the "boardwalk" there.  I loved taking my coffee and Danish out the back door of the building and watching the happy people running by.

Traditions.  That's all these are.  And those are examples of two that don't literally affect me in the slightest...and yet the fact of their existence did.

While I'm ranting, the absolute worst might be the changing of the spring and fall time changes.  In the northeast, at least, it's just WRONG that Halloween and Trick or Treat night must now be started so late in the evening because it stays light out.  A few years after this change, people here still complain about what it's taken away from the latter part of October.  And again, even in L.A., I loved that mid-October time change that signaled the more subtle but still very real change in seasons and activities.  Same thing with the spring change.  These are just wrong in their "new and improved" positions.

Yes DR CHAS SMITH.....but I suppose we must accept that these changes are here.....and though I don't know the details, I would guess that most of them are motivated by $$$$.

TOD:

Probably my best friend from my teen years, Dave. He was the only person I knew back then who shared a love of a wide variety of vintage movies...from obscure, to foreign, to silents, sci-fi, horror, etc. as well as a keen interest in film making.

During out Jr High School years we had competing 8mm film production companies, both specializing in clay animation science fiction films.

When I was walking down the platform to board the train, it appeared that most of the window seats were taken so I followed a group of people to the front , where I assumed there might be more of choice of seating.  Well, there wasn't.  I sat with a woman who looked at me like I didn't belong, but went ahead anyway.

After we left Penn Station, the conductor came through for tickets. I gave him mine and he informed me that I was sitting in business class with a coach ticket.  I told him I didn't realize it and moved to the next car.   Looking back, the only thing different that I could remember was the footrests and more leg room.  But the leg room in coach is fine for me, especially when you're used to being cramped in a plane.

And there was lots of room in the car, so I'm happier here.  I guess the woman instinctively knew that I didn't belong in business class!

So I decided to call a friend in DC.  Luckily his voicemail kicked in just as I looked up and saw that I was in the "Quiet Car," where cell phone usage is not allowed!  I'm glad I didn't end up getting kicked out twice!

Oh, yes.  I had quite a day yesterday!

I got a discount ticket for The Fantasticks.  George Dvorsky was really great, as were the rest of the cast.  I chatted with him briefly after the show.

Brent's show was great (as you might expect)!  He sang "Night Songs," including "Tonight at 8," "Music of the Night," "Some Enchanted Evening,"  the other song from the 80's (?) i think is also called "Music of the Night."   His last song was "Romantic Notions," and his encore was "Never Neverland."  Regarding the latter, he mentioned that he hears it being sung while he's in his dressing room and this was his chance to be the one to sing it.  I think that was one of my favorites.

I think the audience last night was one of the most enthusiastic ever.  Brent mentioned that it was like seeing his life before him when he looked at the crowd.  Apparently there were friends from his entire career represented.

There were a lot of people who wanted to chat afterwards, but I did manage to speak with Brent for a few minutes.   He was as gracious as always.

People look at me like that, even on the few occasions when I have had a business class ticket. I just look right back.

I did some research and discovered that the song from the 80's was "Rhythm of the Night," not Music of the Night.
