We saw HANDS ON A HARDBODY this weekend, my first venture to going to see a Broadway show after a very challenging (at least for me) winter health-wise which some of you reading here know about but I won't go into too much detail about online.
I'm a fan of literally the entire creative team - Amanda Green, Doug Wright, Trey Anastasio (he of great wonderful Phish fame to followers of pop music), director Neil Pepe, choreographer Sergio Trujillo - so i expected to be delighted by the craft. But even Charles Isherwood's excellent review of the La Jolla production had not prepared me for the show to be an emotional experience. i guess i should have known Doug Wright would not do a lightweight show, but he had done Little Mermaid, and after all, i always think of Amanda Green as laugh-out-loud funny. So even having taken in the reviews, the emotional strength of the show was surprising and quite thrilling.
I gather the show has been controversial on chat areas, but the reviews from la Jolla were great as far as I can tell. go figure..
