Secondary TOD:

Brian De Palma
SISTERS
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (benefit of the doubt, haven't seen it in many years)
CARRIE
THE FURY
BLOW OUT

John Carpenter
HALLOWEEN
THE FOG
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
CHRISTINE
THEY LIVE

Both are entertaining, I like each of their styles, and I'm being a bit of a hard grader by not including some of their other efforts which I also very much enjoy.

Elmore, did you read "Gerald's Game"? I can't remember where in the chronology that one fits. But it started out to be his best book because the terror was so real and human, and then he ruined it with some unnecessary alien element that made it all silly.

I've listened to many of his book since then, but I won't sit down with a copy and read one.

I remember reading this and really enjoying the writing, but it's been so long since I read it that I have absolutely no memory of any alien element. :-\

TOD:

So, when did you stop reading Stephen King? Was there a certain novel or collection of stories that just ended it for you?

I think that "Gerald's Game" was one of the last Stephen King books that I read.  I also only read the first two or three of the "Gunslinger" series.  It just took much, much, much (that's three muches) too long for him to write and publish them taht I just lost interest.  I suppose I could go back and read them all now, but I've got quite a few things on my Kindle that I need to get through before I even think about going back to previously read books.

I have not read "Gerald's Game," but I liked the early books, especially "'Salem's Lot" and "The Shining." I also liked the collections of short stories and the book on horror in media.

I thought the wonderful dePalma film "Carrie" was an improvement on the novel - I felt the same about JAWS, a terrible novel and a great movie - and I remember liking "Christine" and "Pet Sematary," which creeped me out.

I agree that 11/22/63 needed some editing.  It was the first Stephen King I'd read in a long, long time and it took me a long, long time to finish it on my Kindle.

DR Jane, I'm sorry to hear that your book group is falling apart.  Mine, too, is in transition.  I started this group, as a sub-group of AAUW Middletown, when Rob was in kindergarten.  Because I have agreed - drumroll, please - to take the presidency of AAUW Middletown for the upcoming year, one of the book group members has stepped up to take over.  She will do a great job and I'm glad she's taking a leadership position, both for the book group and as part of the AAUW branch overall.

Last night, following the TOD of a couple of days ago, I had a craving for some Hammer, so I popped in MANIAC which I hadn't seen in some years.  Had the greatest time watching it, especially since I'd forgotten some of the twists and turns it takes in the last 20 minutes.  Great stuff.

THE SNORKEL is on that disc, and I think I'll watch it tonight.  In fact, that and CHRISTINE just might make a fine double feature.

Only one other person turned up for drinks tonight. One person has been rushed to hospital for appendicitis - probably to have it removed and someone else had an emergency broken window at home to attend to.

My favorite Stephen King book, and filmed adaption, is THE STAND.  I don't often reread novels, but THE STAND was an exception.  And the TV miniseries was everything I wanted it to be.

Second favorite would be a tie between THE DEAD ZONE and IT.  I really liked the film version of THE DEAD ZONE, but the TV adaptation of IT should never have shown us IT.  A big disappointment, they should have showed the adults seeing IT, but left it to the viewers imagination.

Come to think of IT, I reread both THE DEAD ZONE and IT.
I agree. The spider was laughable.

This day has been a really difficult one. I thought ROBERTA was cast, and today we lost our leading man. He's in City Opera's new production of "Anna Nicole Smith," and. while it was my understanding three weeks ago that all schedules were fine, I learned three days ago that they begin their rehearsals on Aug 13, the same day we begin ROBERTA in Dublin, and City Opera doesn't like his being gone for two weeks. I am not paid nearly enough.

Thanks, DR George! I'm trying to keep my sense of humor going, but this has been a really bad day. Luckily, I've got options for other baritones, but I don't like it when I lose my first choice.
