I'm confused by "The teen was arrested" - the rest seems to make some logical sense in terms of wanting to have a rule that can be administered in some way.  I must be missing something important..

Very overcast outside - the question becomes to jog now or wait to see if it's better in the afternoon - I'm thinking the latter.

Ron, the kid is a jerk, the parents are jerks, and the school was right and most importantly the Internet is full of people who love to jump on any "cause" to show how "liberal" they are.  You are most correct - you can't have it all ways.  Either the kid has constitutional rights, which means he can say anything he damn well pleases because that is his right, or he must follow the school's rules because he is a CHILD.

I agree with what others said. And I think the teacher was correct in asking the child to remove the shirt/turn it inside out. But why arrest the kid? I agree something like suspension makes more sense from the info we have.

Probably the kid was arrested for disturbing the peace.

I have no doubt that the kid wore the shirt in order to get in trouble. Stories have been all over the news about children who get suspended for talking about Hello Kitty bubble guns at the school bus stop and for drawing pictures of their dads in the service holding a rifle and for pointing at someone and saying BANG ... etc., etc. etc.  He knew he would get in trouble.

You know, maybe he just wanted a three-day vacation (aka suspension).

Hey Druxy,

I didn't know that Alan Ladd was in the Great Gabsy.  I never saw it.

It's been out of release for years; never on DVD or VHS.

I assume that the version on YouTube is a bootleg.

I've recommended to TCM that they air the Ladd version.  I know that TCM owns a big chunk of the Paramount library, although I'm not certain which ones.  The last time I recommended a film, it was the Ray Milland "The Uninvited" and they've aired that many times since then (it has a large following, I believe).

It could be that, like with the Gershwin estate and PORGY AND BESS, the rights granted by the Fitzgerald estate re: the Alan Ladd GATSBY have expired, which would prevent the film from being shown legally.

I'm just guessing.  I don't really know.

Re Noel Coward songs (from yesterday's discussion topic).  I see these on my computer drive, can't recall what I did them for.

Tune of Noel Coward’s DON’T PUT YOUR DAUGHTER ON THE STAGE, MRS. WORTHINGTON

Don't bet your fortune on the stage,
Mrs. Moneybags,
Don't bet your fortune on the stage.
Though the actors are highly touted
The weekly nut is really tough
Though I'm aware that you’re rich
And love the play that they pitch
That’s really not enough.
It’s a great show, and it seems the danger’s rather small
But could you really lose it all
And not get in a rage?
So be strong
Mrs. Moneybags,
It’s wrong
Mrs. Moneybags,
Don't bet your fortune on the stage.

And this one:  I guess someone must have put their bare feet on the stage during a performance!

Don't put your bare feet on the stage, Mrs. Worthington,
Don't put your bare feet on the stage,
The proscenium is overcrowded
And the stench is pretty tough
Though I'm aware of the fact
Your feet burn to act,
They haven't got the stuff.
You have nice toes, to give the digits all they're due,
But don't you think your corns are too
Disgusting for your age?
I repeat
Mrs. Worthington,
Your feet
Mrs. Worthington,
Don't put your bare feet on the stage.

Funny lyrics, Fred! :D

And that's what I'm sayin...all this permissiveness about the kid having Constitutional rights and the teacher having no right to confront the kid, etc.  It's just wrongheaded, IMO.

Hey Druxy,

I didn't know that Alan Ladd was in the Great Gabsy.  I never saw it.

He starred in the 1940s version.  Redford was in the 70s version.  And now diCaprio is in the 2013 version.

And there was the weird TV mini-series with Mira Sorvino and Paul Rudd as Nick. Can't remember who was Gatsby in that one.

Toby Stephens?

And then he goes back to school wearing the very same T-shirt, again!

If he really is planning a career in the military, as he states, he is gonna have to check that attitude at the door.

What a day this has been.  Crazy, crazy day.  I woke up to the most annoying e-mail possible and dealt with that for two solid hours - don't know what the outcome will be - has to do with the publisher and it's just nutty - I've escalated it all the way up the food chain to the highest management, but won't speak with them until morning at which time I'll know what's what.  Completely irritating.  One way or another it will all be fine, but they have now cost me several days in production time and they're going to have to make up for it.

Then Doug Haverty reminded me that today was the day we were meeting with the tech people about all the website changes.  So, we drove to Granada Hills and had a great meeting and I gave the go-ahead to begin the transition to a much more up-to-date place.  Shortly they will be updating everything, but you won't see that - they're cloning the site, doing a ghost version that only they, Doug, and I can see - and we'll make sure it is functioning exactly as we want in terms of this board and how I post my notes.  We are so far behind in terms of software updates, it's like we're in another century.  I told them I'd like to stay with both companies software-wise, just because that's what I'm used to, but if we find that the two alternative companies offer better things, we'll switch.  If it's the latter, this board will probably look a little different, but all archives will be saved and there.  I'd prefer not doing that, though - much easier if we stay where we are.

Apparently, the new software for the place I do my notes from, has tons of new stuff that wasn't available to me in this ancient version - I'll be able to bold, italicize and all that stuff - I'll be able to insert clickable links, videos, music - whatever I feel like and that will be totally great.  So, we're on the way!  We also talked about the radio show, and I think the way that will work is that you'll click on it and it will open a universal player (nothing to download) and you play it directly from the site itself.  That sounds great to me.

I've been home for about two hours and I'm exhausted.

Bruce Pomahac and I had lunch at a really good burger place on West 26th Street, called RARE. We unfortunately had the most dreadful, fawning, oily, love-me-love-me waiter I have ever encountered. I told Brce I wanted to give him a valium and prop him in a corner.  The lunch was quite good, and then he came back to my office and listened to DEAREST ENEMY. I was happy to hear his thoughts and answer his questions.

I need a nap.
