TCB Ebert Lives

Over the last few days, I have seen almost one entire movie, most of two movies
and a segment of a third. Not bad for a not very current film person.

The segment that I saw was of Le Miz. I only watched part of it, because I am
hoping they might show it in the big theater on the ship, which is how I would
prefer to watch it. I watched from Fontine having sold her hair has taken ill,
and Istopped watching after (I believe) "A Heart Full of Love." What I saw of
the film, I enjoyed; if enjoyed is the correct word for Le Miz. I don't quite
understand what the complaint so many people had with Russell Crowe's voice. I
didn't have any problem with it. It still not my favorite musical. I love the
music, but there is too many damn stories to keep straight. You need a score
card rather than a program. Will I watch the entire film some day? Maybe.

The "almost all" was LINCOLN. I thought the sets and the costumes were wonderful. I thought the acting by Mr. Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, and especially Sally Field was fantastic. A pity the producers didn't put Ms Field up in the Best Actress category instead of Supporting Actress. I think she might have beaten Jennifer Lawrence. Watching the movie, which moves very quickly, the one question I had was "Why?" What was the point of the movie? Admiring the
acting, the costumes, and the sets was great, but it had no real purpose. I
felt no better or no worse having seen the film. I don't know, it seemed as
much a film about emancipation as it was about Lincoln. Thank you Mr. Speilberg for a History Channel special

The two "partial films" I saw; one was an old friend and one was a discovered
treasure. The old friend was APOLLO 13. I can't believe how caught up I get
watching that movie. Even knowing how it ends, I still hold my breath wondering
if they will make it. Another movie with a great cast of actors from Tom Hanks
to Gary Sinese.

And the discovered treasure, but probably only a discovery to me, was a film
entitled BIG FISH. I couldn't really describe it, nor would I want to try, but
if you get a chance to see the film, go for it. Albert Finney in his most
American role. A touching little film.

Big Fish, the musical, is trying out in Chicago. The reviews were quite encouraging.
