TOD

My favorite in the U.K. is Cafe Rouge - a French style chain.

I used to like the original Wimpy of decades ago when they served burgers with onions and toasted buns. Now superseded by the popularity of the awful (IMO) McDonalds.

TOD:

I'm not a big fan of chain restaurants...places like Applebee's, O' Charley's, Outback, all sort of have the same level of mediocrity.  The only fast food chains I really regularly patronize are the Cincy chili/coney island places like Gold Star and Skyline.  I like places like the Cracker Barre and Bob Evans, because you can always get a nice breakfast at them.  And I'm fond of the Golden Corral as an all you can eat place.

Doug, it seems as though all the Wimpys have disappeared in London.  I remember in the early eighties the one right in Picadilly Circus.

Charles - I often visited the large Wimpy in Picadilly Circus - actually the one I visited had probably gone by the early eighties. I think it was the first Wimpy in London and the only one for a long time. After work on Saturday morning in the early '60s (my first job) I would go there and sit on one of the bar stools having a burger then go and see a movie. There are still a few Wimpy restaurants around but they are not much like the originals.

We like Five Guys  although the quality seems to vary from  site to site -  here is one right down the block from my house but we tend to drive to the one about 8 miles away as the burgers just taste better there

Also, we like Bill Johnson's Big Apple -- a small local chain. Great if you want a lot of delicious grease for breakfast!

Applebee's puts sauce on everything, and my DH won't eat anything with sauce. My daughter probably wouldn't eat anything there, either. So I never go there.

Of course being from Long Island we are big on Diners - nearly every town has one - and most of them are open 24 hours and run by Greeks - you can have anything from pancakes  and eggs to Surf and Turf at anytime of the day you wish

I was shocked when I went to Houston in 1972 with my Youth Group and there was not a diner to be found - and no one had a clue  as to what a  diner was -  we couldn't get bagels or rye bread either

The ones I've been to are pleasant, but not TOO nice!  they seem very chain-like

There are some Red Lobsters that seem too nice somehow.
