Good morning.  The DD and I survived our first night!  We both slept like logs, it was a great sleep.  Took the DD out for a walk this morning, as will be our custom from now on, and right outside my door is a donut shop.  Oh dear dear dear.... the smell of freshly prepared donuts in the morning, and they are yummy as I've been there before. Since I stopped eating many things like that, one donut will probably do me in for the day.  I'll just suck it up and deal :)

About 4-5 months ago, three young guys moved into the house across the street from us.  Apparently, the wealthy parents of one bought the house for him...and he moved in with his buddies.

For the last few weeks, they house appeared to be "abandoned," then 3-4 days ago, there have been repairmen doing work on the property, and now there is a "For Sale" sign up.

Turns out that the boys had turned the place into a meth lab and when the parents found out, they kicked them out.

That's all I need across the street from me: a meth lab.

 >:(

YIKES!  Too bad they canceled COPS - your neighborhood might have been on the Season Premiere in September.

The HBO movie of the book written by Liberace's boyfriend Scott Thorson....featuring Michael Douglas and the piano man and Matt Damon as Scott....

As if to say nothing too small to note in song about Liberace.  I looked back and found my plea for the estate to move the Liberace Museum in vegas closer to the strip, because unless you had a car, it was so long a shlep to get to, and nothing else to do there

As if sung to the people who man the Liberace museum - from 2010, it seems
Tune of Liberace’s signature song I’LL BE SEEING YOU

I’d be seeing you
On every single Vegas visit
What you offer is exquisite.
Very true

But to get that way
Can mean a half a day
You’re really much too far
Too long a schlep
You really are

I’d be seeing you
Lee’s story really does inspire
There’s so much there that I admire
But it’s just too much stress to hire -

A taxi to that strip mall where
there’s nothing else to do
If you were on the busy Strip
Then I’d be seeing you

Kate, you should probably delete your post with your personal address. You have 3 buttons at the top of your post "Quote" "Modify" "Delete". Just click delete and your post will be gone. It's not a good idea to broadcast that information here. Even though a small group of regulars read the board, lots of other people read who are not registered and you never know what might happen. I'm not trying to scare you (or anyone else) but this isn't a completely private space.

You can send George a personal message with your address that no one else will see. Go back to Page 1 Message 3, It's George's post. On the lower left hand corner under his picture there is a green scroll (if you hover your cursor over it you should see the words "Personal Message". Click on that green scroll and it will open a new window with George's HHW information. You can put in a subject line, tell him your address and the message will go just to him. It's safer than posting your address here in the open.

If you don't get a chance to delete the message, Bruce should be able to do it, since he's the moderater of the board.

Good catch, DR Ben.

Kate, thay caveat applies to ANY board, not just this one.  Always avoid posting personal addresses, phone numbers, and emails.

(People do post email addresses on boards, but they should never be typed out in their literal format, because automated spamming systems will pick them up.)

Good one, FJL.

I haven't been to Vegas in years, but I'll certainly want to take in the Liberace museum next time I'm out there.  It's ridiculous that they dumped it in an out-of-the-way location.

More, re the notes:

A close cousin to the shame and horror of improper amplification is the shame and horror of cut-down orchestras employing machines instead of live musicians.

Of course there's a huge gray area here, since a certain amount of keyboard usage would seem to be acceptable -- but there are many lines to be drawn, and this needs to be examined on a case by case basis.

Case in point --

The Cathy Rigby PETER PAN was an incredibly wonderful and joyous production, and I'd be hard put to envision anything finer than what I experienced there.

The orchestra was wonderful, too.  They listed the musicians in the program and, as always, I checked out the pit beforehand and saw the mikes in front of each stand.  As this was a large professional theater (the WONDERFUL Proctors Theatre in Schenectady), that didn't cause any particular shock or dismay.  It is what it is, etc.  For keyboards, the conductor had a 61-key mounted next to his stand, and there was an 88-key below.  I figured he'd be playing the solo celesta cues on the small one, and that the regular keyboardist would be providing fill and support here and there, especially since there were only a few string players listed.  (As it turned out, the conductor played some "Tink" cues, while the keyboardist played others.  Which seemed strange, but whatever.)  The players were excellent and provided a full, rich sound -- I forget the number, but let's say twelve or maybe a couple more?  It was beautiful, and I had to give some credit to whatever the keyboard was bringing to the table.

Then, shockingly (okay, let's all say it:  I'm naive!), as I stood over the pit to watch them play the Exit Music, I suddenly realized that the little table with a computer on it, kind of far off in a back corner of the pit, was NOT there for some technical reason other than music.  It was a gal tapping that fu- infernal little keyboard in time with the conductor.  They were utilizing what MTI calls OrchExtra (or maybe that's what it's called everywhere), and the large part of the sound filling the theater was being produced by software.  This won't be news to some here, and it wouldn't be so shocking to me in 2013 if I got out to more shows.  But that was just disheartening to discover -- disheartening to find it being used in the first place, and perhaps even more so to have had the wool pulled over my own ears.

And all the while, the program touts the local musician's union.  Shame.  For shame.  I don't have a horse in this race, but how is that being allowed to happen?

But I digress..

EDIT:  12 local musicians (Schenectady Local 85-133), plus 4 touring ones:  Conductor, Keyboard I (the full sized one), "Keyboard 2"(which would have to be the euphemism for the computer one), and Drums/Percussion.

Well, I must be off to do some Memorial Day shopping for some outdoor grillin' tomorrow -- such as it will be, since the temperature will only be up into the low 70s.  If we're lucky.  But it will be sunny and the wind is supposed to have died down by then, and thankfully, the days of DELUGE are behind us.

Well, it rained hard and heavy again this morning. Maybe three more inches while I was in church. It was hard to pay attention to the end of the sermon, the rain was so hard.

Now, I have standing water. The cat doesn't like it.

Getting together tonight with the folks I went to Italy with last year. We're making dinner and each has a course. I chose antipasti and think I have enough food for the six of us to eat for two days.

I grilled red onion, zucchini, yellow squash and asparagus and roasted three red peppers, then bought some assorted meats and made a white bean salad with rosemary and basil.

I know the first time there was a mixing board in a Broadway theater was Promises, Promises - then it became the norm after that.  So, I'm not sure if that's the first time a band was fully miked or not.

Today is our last performance of the first weekend of "Cinder Edna."  We have two more weekends after this.  I'm running the sound board and, very topical, I'm trying not to blow out everyone's ears with the microphones.  There have been a few problems with a couple of the microphones crackling and popping, but it's not because of the actors' saying their "Ps" or "Ts" too loudly.  It's something electronic and I don't have the experience or training to really troubleshoot it.  I can only do what I can and hopefully, it'll all sound pretty good.  We did actually lower the volume of the band and that made it easier for me to lower the volume of the actors and to control that.  So far, so good.
