I really liked The Guilt Trip.  Having a son, I can so totally relate to some of the situations in the movie.  The first time I saw it, some scenes make me cry

I have watched it three times.

I could relate as well though I'm not ready to watch it again. :)

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We got home from Lima in time to see the second half of the Indianapolis 500, which is STILL a big deal for me, DR JRand - deep Hoosier roots, you know.  We were in the car in time to hear Jim Nabors sing and MHG utter those famous words.  Stopped to pick up fried chicken for lunch.  My Grandma would be pleased.

Just got an invite to a backer's audition/presentation of that musical about Studio 54 directed by Tommy Tune.  I'm GOING!

That sounds like fun!

Hey Bro, Are you getting ready for Bab's concerts?

Where is this "Bro" coming from?

I love it.

By the way, congratulations, Kate, on your milestone!

Case in point --

The Cathy Rigby PETER PAN was an incredibly wonderful and joyous production, and I'd be hard put to envision anything finer than what I experienced there.

The orchestra was wonderful, too.  They listed the musicians in the program and, as always, I checked out the pit beforehand and saw the mikes in front of each stand.  As this was a large professional theater (the WONDERFUL Proctors Theatre in Schenectady), that didn't cause any particular shock or dismay.  It is what it is, etc.  For keyboards, the conductor had a 61-key mounted next to his stand, and there was an 88-key below.  I figured he'd be playing the solo celesta cues on the small one, and that the regular keyboardist would be providing fill and support here and there, especially since there were only a few string players listed.  (As it turned out, the conductor played some "Tink" cues, while the keyboardist played others.  Which seemed strange, but whatever.)  The players were excellent and provided a full, rich sound -- I forget the number, but let's say twelve or maybe a couple more?  It was beautiful, and I had to give some credit to whatever the keyboard was bringing to the table.

Then, shockingly (okay, let's all say it:  I'm naive!), as I stood over the pit to watch them play the Exit Music, I suddenly realized that the little table with a computer on it, kind of far off in a back corner of the pit, was NOT there for some technical reason other than music.  It was a gal tapping that fu- infernal little keyboard in time with the conductor.  They were utilizing what MTI calls OrchExtra (or maybe that's what it's called everywhere), and the large part of the sound filling the theater was being produced by software.  This won't be news to some here, and it wouldn't be so shocking to me in 2013 if I got out to more shows.  But that was just disheartening to discover -- disheartening to find it being used in the first place, and perhaps even more so to have had the wool pulled over my own ears.

And all the while, the program touts the local musician's union.  Shame.  For shame.  I don't have a horse in this race, but how is that being allowed to happen?

But I digress..

EDIT:  12 local musicians (Schenectady Local 85-133), plus 4 touring ones:  Conductor, Keyboard I (the full sized one), "Keyboard 2"(which would have to be the euphemism for the computer one), and Drums/Percussion.

Were there the right number of musicians in the pit as noted in the program?

I used "Sinfonia" (which is what it's called, MTI calls it one thing, RnH calls it another) for the helicopter show.  It is a wonderful piece of technology for small theatres that either don't have the budget for a real orchestra or the space.  The downside is that it's kind of hard to operate.  I know many people have their opinions, but it's a useful tool.

Yes, the musicians were properly accounted for.

I should have added that I've seen it used in one community theater production (so far) and I didn't object to it there.  That was BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and the music director sat there right in front of the stage (pit area, but no actual pit) "playing" it with his left hand and conducting the stage (and only a bass player and drummer) with his right.  The thing sounded great, for the most part.  Certain bits would suddenly sound a little synth-y, which served to highlight how good the rest of it was.  And would the production have been what it was without that?  Not at all.

He told me it was quite the challenge to learn and master.  But master it, he did.

So, I don't object to it in these certain situations.  In professional venues, though, with all the space in the world.....

I agree with that, DR ChasSmith.  And in this case, I blame the producers who don't want to spend the extra dough to fill out the orchesta.  Why is it that the music is always first to go?

In other "Sinfonia" news, I'm struggling over the size of my pit for a production of In the Heights this fall.  I have the budget for the 9 players (tour orchestration), but I don't have the room.  2 keys, 2 percussion already take up a lot of room, and the reed book calls for 7 instruments which also takes up room, plus amps for guitar and bass.  In this case, I have the budget and not the room, so I'm considering "Sinfonia".

And I am home from Toyland; all the fixes for the piano-vocal score are sent to the copyist for repair, and tomorrow I'll deal with the full score. I am craving mac 'n' cheese for dinner.

Went to the book signing - I stayed for an hour, but they started twenty-five minutes late.  He had a bit over twenty people there, which is very good these days.  I hope I have that many - of course, I hope I have more.  I do know that two of the people at this signing will be at mine because they happen to be Adriana Hofstetter's biggest fans.

Back from a celebration of three bar and bat mitzvahs in the Bronx.  Really beautiful, it was for triplets who seem to really care a lot for each other, and what a gorgeously done shared ceremony,

I guess I'll mosey on over to Art's Deli for this meeting I'd rather not go to.  Hoping it will be short and sweet and then the rest of the day and evening are MINE!
