My favorite medley on the Tony Awards last night was the one from CINDERELLA.

My wife and I looked at each other and, almost together, said: "Finally, something we can hum."

With these new musicals every year, they always seem to pick a big dance number to promo that particular show on The Tonys, rather than a song that will stick with you (assuming there are any that will stick with you).

I'm actually quite delighted to hear that BK was given the willies by SARDONICUS back in the day. I vividly remember my first time seeing it because of those very willies.

I think I first read about it in Famous Monsters, and I found the movie tie-in paperback and was suitably creeped out by reading it. Then it finally came to town and my dad dropped me off at the Gateway Theater in Fort Lauderdale (my avatar on the HTF) one fine Saturday morning, and I was loving every minute of it, till the graveyard scene freaked me out -- and when the Moment of Reveal came, I must have gone through the roof.

But I loved the story, and I've always thought it a fine Castle. Did he do any other Gothic horror? I don't think so. But the cast, the Von Dexter score, the mood, it all adds up for me. And it's a Halloween favorite around here. Friends and I watch it almost every year, and I'm delighted to hear we'll be doing so through the miracles of our friend Mr. Blu-ray this year.

Herewith, my paperback. I keep it in a small plastic bag -- not so much to protect the cover, but because this one is so brittle that it's been coming apart in sections over the years. But these are hard to come by, and I treasure the fact that it's the one I bought in '61.

Time to head to the eye appointment. And it's raining.

I hope this goes quickly. My doctor is thorough but really slow. I may not be seen before 1:00pm, and I hope I am wrong.

I'm still hoping for the soundtrack of OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR! as well as cast recordings of the London Mermaid shows COWARDY CUSTARD and COLE and the Broadway cast of OH COWARD!

In closing (harrumph harrumph), the memory of my own SARDONICUS willies ranks right up there with my first time seeing PSYCHO (specifically, the Mrs. Bates "reveal"), and certain choice moments in Roger Corman's Poe films -- all of these first enjoyed in that unequalled time period of ca. 1960-1963.

I can't really think of any movies that I want that aren't on DVD. There was a production of Shakespeare's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING with Maggie Smith, Robert Stephens, Derek Jacobi, and Frank Finlay that I saw around 1970 on PBS that I absolutely loved. It was a National Theatre Production directed by Franco Zeferrelli. The BBC found a tape of it about two years ago. I keep hoping that they will release it on DVD.

A friend transferred all my vinyl to CD a few years back so every record I ever owned is on CD.

Some of these movies, if you can't find them on DVD; try youtube. I saw PONY SOLDIER there a while back. Also thanks to BK, I am a firm believer in the region-free DVD player. They're very inexpensive...seen them as low as forty dollars...and it allows you to order DVDs from anywhere.

A few thoughts on the Tonys:

I know I watched the opening number, but I have absolutely no recollection of any of it now -- except for that final pose -- and that's not supposed to happen. I totally agree that everything seen should be from actual, you know, "shows". Remember those? Why make up something? What are they thinking?

I despise that audience in the pit thing. Who are those people and why are they there? If it's a VIP thing, that seems a totally dumb place to sit, if only because of the amount of stuff going on behind them. Unbelievable. But I also despise the E&T orchestra and conductor. They're probably under or behind the stage since they have that incredible moving pit, but they might as well be in some building a mile away like the Oscars orchestra was. And I agree that Radio City is a terrible place for this particular awards show. This is all a travesty of what live theater is all about.

Yes, Tom Hanks is one of those guys who looks not only completely different with the 'stache -- it's just WRONG. Gregory Peck was another whose looks were altered to the point of being unrecognizable because of the sudden adoption of facial hair in later years. Is it required for the part Hanks is playing? I don't even care. Bad choice.

BK suspects the use of canned cheering and screaming. As much of a cynic as I am, I never even thought of that. But whether such is employed or not, the audience reactions are just disheartening. And I SO love it when there's a sudden close-up of someone in the biz who's obviously bored or just plain mystified as to WTF is going on.

Did I understand Hal Prince to say that PHANTOM still employs a 28-piece orchestra? Did I hear the number right?

Maybe what I've heard is rumor and such, but I'd been under the impression that that show was one of the great experimenters in replacing live musicians with electronics. Or maybe it was threatened that they were prepared to do so in the event of strikes.

The In Memoriam segment is always a crap shoot on any awards show nowadays. This one could have been better but I didn't think it was the worst I'd seen, by any means. That honor goes to an Oscars one a few years back which was a complete travesty. (But now I view all of theirs as travesty, having read so much about how their dearly departed get chosen for inclusion, or not.)

STAR might be easier to find in the FOX QUAD set that includes Anna and the King of Siam, Daddy Long Legs, and Can Can. All of the extras from the DVD are included....although the regular DVD by itself is less than $9 right now.

With all of the releases from all of the companies now, it is hard to find a movie that is not on DVD, but certainly those listed already seem to be MIA.

My vote would go for:

The Undead
I Was a Teen Age Werewolf
The Amazing Colossal Man

I have the latter two on VHS, but James Nicholson's widow seems to have a tight grip on these three titles and for some reason refusing any additional release...I don't think The Undead has been released in the U.S. in any home format....except for a silent Super Eight movie.... I do think all three are available outside the country.
