Don't leave a response. People on goodreads have to feel like they can give their true opinions without the author commenting. There have been a lot of problems with authors and readers getting into battles. And most readers I know hate when authors do this.

It's interesting because I would never give a book 1 star. And while I always try to articulate my criticisms I still do it realizing that the author could read it.

I'm not leaving a comment, although since this little teen has a blog (where she misspells my name) if I did leave a comment it wouldn't be on the Goodreads site. My feeling is that if she's putting out her little teen thoughts for all to read, then anything is fair game. Her "review" of Lord of the Flies is most amusing - she doesn't believe the book, that children would not behave like that - I think we all know that that book is right on the money about how children would ape the way adults behave, but this girl thinks that human nature is "good" and never "bad." Maybe she's trying to win the Anne Frank award. But it's so obvious she's of her generation and that no one sixteen would call their mother mommy without "irony" (this current generation is all about the irony) when I just had lunch with two teens who absolutely call their mother mommy with no irony whatsoever. And to say I somehow soil The Music Man when the book is an obvious love letter to the show just shows how truly ignorant she is.

And I am home from Toyland! We ran out of paper about 2:30,with 6 numbers to go, and we ran out of tape around 2:00, so we reconvene next week when new products arrive.

Peter kindly gave me a ride to the Upper West Side, and now I'm thinking about dinner.

I do not know what Goodreads is, and I think I will stay that way.

I disagree. I don't think that just because she posts the review on her blog that it is fair game for the author. I would not comment period.

I'm not saying that what she wrote is right. It certainly wasn't very nice. But it's her opinion.

If you like to read then goodreads is an invaluable site. I love it and use it a lot. It allows you to track the books you've read and the books you want to read.

This isn't difficult music (okay, a few passages to work out, but nothing extraordinary), but it's been tricky getting used to reading and playing it. It's a two-piano arrangement and I'm playing the upper part. What's weird is staying on the upper half of the keyboard with unrelenting treble clef and lots of "8va" and making sure both hands are in the right octaves. I haven't checked to see if this is literally the case, but the arranger might have created it with the possibility in mind of two people actually performing it on one piano.

If you like to read then goodreads is an invaluable site. I love it and use it a lot. It allows you to track the books you've read and the books you want to read.

I have tried to like Goodreads but I find it confusing and not that interesting. I don't need to track the books I've read and want to read - I wouldn't even know how to do such a thing, nor would I want to.

As to the girl, I'm not going to comment (although your post really makes me want to), but would have every right to do so once she makes it public on a blog. Many authors, of books, plays, films have written angry and/or pointed letters in rebuttal to critics, especially when the critics have been really stupid in their criticism. That's the thing about this girl - she is obviously like the girls Adriana doesn't care for - and is "reviewing" the book in that way. She levels certain objections that have no basis in reality in what's written in the book - that's not opinion, that's stupid. It's fine to not like the book, but not when it has obviously hit a nerve with her in terms of the "stereotypes" she's going on about. But that's the thing about this generation - just as with EVERY generation there ARE stereotypes. I have sat next to teenage girls and had to endure the conversations and they are exactly what's in this book - I don't make this stuff up, you know.

I sort of tried it once, several years back, and was mystified as to its workings and its value. To me, at any rate. Can't even imagine wanting such a "tracking" thing. But I do know other people who are active with it and swear by it.

After I finish it, I've got a ghost story, the title of which I forget, the new Mary Wickes biography, and a Jane Austen mystery, Death Comes To Pemberley. which will be a BBC miniseries next year.

I also want to reread Tom Jones and Robin Buss' translation of The Count of Monte Cristo.

As for tracking the books, DR Jennifer pushed it and then Keith also decided I needed to use it and transferred most of the books I've read onto their site. I admit I am really glad I'm tracking there.

I've been using Goodreads to search books since I discovered them and much prefer the reviews there than at Amazon.

If I read this review which is so low I would get a feel for the author and would see this is a book about an atypical teen who might be interesting. Basically I'm restating that a negative review like this could actually be a positive thing.

As for her blog, can't help you there and can understand why it is frustrating to you on top of the review.

It was very sweet of some thoughtful dear reader to send today's notes to one of the reviewers I was talking about - I was, in fact, talking about several reviewers and this gentleman, a former dear reader, was one of them. You see, here it is again - it's okay for the reviewer to do whatever the reviewer likes but it's not cricket to review the reviewer. Because in case anyone isn't very clear on it - my notes are written by ME and reflect only my opinion, as it has every day since November of 2001. So, what the point of sending this day's notes to the reviewer is kind of beyond me - not hard to figure out who, but that's not really germane. It has resulted in a couple of pleasant e-mails back and forth, and that I enjoy.
