So, last night I ushered for Olympia's Masterworks Choral Ensemble (MCE). It was a very good show. They did pop music based on classical music...Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic," which was based on Prelude in C Minor by Chopin...things like that. It was highly enjoyable. They also had a couple of "specialty" numbers.

Last year, the MCE had a fund raiser where people could bid on, among other things, either conducting a song or singing a solo. The woman who'd won the conducting obviously wasn't a "conductor," but she actually did pretty well. She followed the choir without missing a beat.

The solo that was won was actually sung by a friend of mine named Bruce. He had also sung with the choir quite a few years ago and has a very nice voice.

Anyway, the piece that he sang had a great story to it. When he was younger (in the mid to late 70s, I think), he remembered seeing Karen and Richard Carpenter on their TV show. She sang and he accompanied her on an arrangement of "From This Moment On" based on Bach's Prelude No. 2 (I have last night's song list which specifies the classical pieces that the pop songs were based on...it's not from memory). The original performance by Karen and Richard was supposed to be a two-piano arrangement with the second piano played by the one and only Victor Borge. However (as the story was told last night), Victor couldn't learn his part in time, so Richard accompanied Karen alone for the broadcast.

When Bruce ~~bought~~ won the performance, he remembered this and actually contacted Richard Carpenter about the arrangement. Richard Carpenter sent Bruce the original hand-written two-piano chart! The MCE conductor had it transcribed into notation software so that it could be readable, and Bruce actually gave the world premiere performance of the original version of that arrangement...and it was fantastic! As I said, Bruce is a good singer and he nailed it! The two pianists were also wonderful. It didn't sound like a note was missed...and they played a LOT of notes!

The accompaniment is an adaptation of J.S. Bach's "Prelude in C minor" from his Well-Tempered Clavier suite. (With some Richard thrown in toward the end, obviously).

Last night we watched "Liberace: Behind the Music," the older TV movie version with Victor Garber. I concur with bk's comments; Garber was pretty good, but on the whole this version didn't have a lot more to recommend it, other than Maureen Stapleton as the mother. Both this version and the more recent one were dour and sour - no joy. Sad!
