Recent episodes of MAD MEN have included scenes in the lobby of the General Motors building in Detroit. My father worked in that building from 1953-1967 and I have vivid memories of the cars on display like we saw last night. I also remember the model cars like the one Bob brought to Joan's little boy. And I remember cellophane-wrapped, cherry-flavored hard candies in the shape of the Chevy logo...

Not my own photo (obviously), and earlier than I would have known it, but it's a great shot. (And look at how everyone is dressed -- in Miami Beach!) My memories of being treated to something here, after seeing a roadshow film such as "Mad World" or "My Fair Lady", are pure magic.

TOD 2: Here's an image of the Belvedere, a water fountain park in Louisville. When I was growing up, it was a place on the riverfront where you would go to listen to the sounds of water while sitting in the blazing sun. Nowadays, kids actually play in the water. I think that's a lot more fun. And cooler. They used to have ethnic festivals there. Also saw the Louisville Symphony play there a few times.

Well, to answer my own question - I had to this morning. As I stepped out of the apartment to take the DD for a walk, and it's RAINING. Can you believe it? Raining in June in the Bay Area <insert sarcasm here> We must have brought it home from Florida.

Just a fantastic visual essay in the notes! While my hometown of San Mateo (which I live in AGAIN!!) isn't as exciting and glamorous as LA, I feel the same way about certain things like restaurants, movie theatres, etc that are now gone or replaced. It saddens me about the movie theatres - everywhere, not just here - where the insides were ornate and well designed and now they are just gone. Like no one cares about the past anymore.

Lovely notes with photos.....I enjoyed reading and SEEING them very much.

I don't remember that we went OUT to eat very much when I was growing up. But we did have hamburgers or shakes at the local Rexall Drug Store counter.

The Ritz Theatre was the town movie house that we frequented many times.....along with the Center-Brook Drive IN (half way between Centerton and Brooklyn) and the Maplecroft Drive In....which usually showed Little Rascals shorts with its movies....

LY = Lyceum

When we moved to Mooresville it was VE 1

VE = Vernon

I took cat Freddy to the vet on Friday and he was put through all kinds of tests, pokes, and prods. He has gone from 13 lbs to 7 lbs over the last year but the tests did not show anything out of the ordinary as far as kidney problems, thyroid, and what not.

The doctor suspects cancer is likely, but as Fred is 14 years old, not much sense in tormenting the poor guy with more tests, not to mention the nasty treatments.

Doc gave me some pills to help with his appetite, and so that has improved. He won't drink water out of his dish any longer. Nor will he drink out of the toilet (which had become his favorite drinking spot over the last few months, for some reason). Fred will now only drink out of the bathroom sink faucet. Very odd.

Anyway, thank you all for the vibes.

The makers for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES have a new show starting titled, I think, MAIDS. It sounds like it might be good.

I started watching a movie recommended, I believe, by BK called "Hitler's Children," a documentary in which survivors of the highest ranking members of the Third Reich are interviewed. The movie is only 85 minutes or so long, but I had to stop it midway through, as it was too much to bear in one sitting. I will return to it this evening, I hope, but it's as devastating a movie as Resnais' "Night and Fog."

And I see that the library has just gotten "Shoah," which is nine hours. Wonder how long that would take for me to get through?
