Love the cartoon, DR Jane, and am thankful that I no longer live in Arizona during the summer months.

Re: The Great American Food and Beverage Company restaurant...
I worked at the one on 6th and Wilshire in Santa Monica....there was always a very long wait to get in, 2-3 hours on a Friday or Saturday night. Now it's a pet store.

One popular item on the menu was called "The Plank"....it consisted of a 4-6 foot long wooden plank, piled high with chicken, ribs, rice, fruit, and artichokes. It took 2 people to carry it out and place it on the table.

Then there were the "Ice Cream Orgies"....a huge wooden plank, this time piled high with ice cream, whipped cream, nuts, fudge, etc. etc.

We didn't even have a stage, just walked around and started a song whenever there was a lull.
Rickie Lee Jones once worked there, and so did Peter Tork.
Visiting friends and relatives always chose this restaurant and still think of it fondly.

One of those specious Blu-ray sites that one loves to hate - just went on and found a message that I've been issued a permanent ban, like it was there idea.  A few weeks ago they sent me yet another of their endless "infractions" suggesting I was posting just to incite.  What I was, in fact, having the temerity to do was correct all their usual idiots from spreading misinformation and doing good Blu-ray releases harm.  They don't like that.  They'd rather have the idiots than someone who knows what they're talking about.  So, I shot back a reply telling them to ban me permanently - yes, it was MY idea you insufferable bunch of Nazi twelve-year-old cretins.  Not yours - MINE.  Perhaps I'll have some fun in tomorrow's notes.

Topic of the Day:

In my CD player:  Judy Kuhn's "All This Happiness"* and right after that will be the original Broadway cast recording of "Kinky Boots."

In my Blu-ray/DVD player:  Season 1 of "Smash."  I know I have a couple of other things, but I don't remember what they are.

*I just noticed that at the end of the booklet for "All This Happiness," there's an ad for "Passion" on PS Classics, but it shows the original picture with Melissa Errico.  Guess that CD was released before the finalizing of "Passion."

What did you think of "All This Happiness"?

I love Judy Kuhn, so I enjoyed it.  It was not a traditional "theater"-type recording, but a delightful, intimate recording.  A small combo of just drums & percussion, piano and acoustic & electric cello (only three musicians) accompanies her.  Unless someone objects to her song choices or the order of them, I think you'll like it.

I liked it, but I doubt I will listen to it often. And think you nailed it with the comment about the song choices. They're just not what I'd like to hear her sing.

We've got two projects coming up, both of which have had previous CD releases and ones where I've hated the covers.  So, Doug has redone the art for ours - one version of one using the same art (the poster art) but removing a lot of negative black space that was pointless and making the title treatment actually look good.  So, while that's the same art, it looks a million times better and actually has some dynamism now.  The alternate and totally new cover is also very nice - much brighter, no black at all and kind of a grabber.  Which would you choose - you can't see them, but would you automatically go to the poster art, or would you like something completely different.  Of course, we could do one on the front and the other on the back of the booklet - then people could choose.  What do you think.

I'm thinking DR Ginny may have gotten wet this evening.

Fortunately, no, DR Jane.  We were at the Michigan reception during the downpour.  It was a nice affair and, as planned, we met up with my friend who's a librarian at the same university where my niece is golf pro.

To answer your earlier question, many library schools have official reunions during ALA, but this one was "off the books."  I don't know why Michigan stopped having events that get listed in the program book, but I think it happened around the time they removed the L-word from the name of the school.

Sometimes Wikipedia tends to phrase their information in a pecular manner.  Since I didn't know anything about Gene de Paul I sought out wisdom from the Big W.

Quote
De Paul was one of the composers of the songs and dances for the 1954 musical film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for which he was nominated for the 1983 Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Strange?

I'm glad you missed the downpour.

I don't think Keith knew about the school reunions.  He did say occasionally he would see someone from school at the conventions.

I wish I had known you when I went to my one and only in New Orleans.  I might have even gone to more if I knew someone there.  I think I went out with Keith for a winter one.  That was after his father died & I was there to help his mother move, only she kindly moved before we arrived and all I had to do was drive her around to do errands.  That would have been after the last big earthquake.

DR Jane, this is my 19th ALA annual (summer) conference.  Add in a couple of mid-winters and 7 divisionals (academic, school, public), I've managed to attend a national conference every year, except those in which major life events have occurred - 1981 (marriage), 1985 (pregnancy), 1988 (move into house), 2010 (heart attack), etc.

Can someone help me? I put a cd on my ipod, and when I try to eject it, it says: "The ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files in use by another application."

What does that mean, and how do I eject the ipod?

I don't spend enough time searching for free or discounted books.

Speaking of discounted, I'm currently reading the $2.99 version from B & N of "A Town Like Alice".  It is my pic for my July book group discussion.  I'm enjoying it immensely.

I stopped getting free kindle books. But I still look at the lists of discounted ebooks everyday to see if there is anything that interests me. But now I mostly only get books that my library doesn't have and that I've heard about/wanted. But I don't have to look for these books. There are people that compile lists every day.

And speaking of NOOKS, it was my understanding that they are getting rid of/going to stop making their TABLETS but not their regular nook ereaders. And they are not going to stop selling ebooks.  So right now it probably shouldn't be a problem.

It's sort of confusing to me how amazon and kindles can be doing so well yet the numbers for B&N were so bad.

It shouldn't be that confusing DR Jennifer.  Amazon is the world's largest internet retailer, and B&N has been going in the toilet for several years.

DR George - EGG SALAD AT SUBWAY??   I wonder how long it will take for the bay area to catch on.  I'm a HUGE fan of egg salad.  I can't wait!

It was quite good...just a tad too much mayo, though, but still tasty. :)

I had a shrimp melt for lunch today.  They put so much mayo in the shrimp mixture that I couldn't even eat it.

DR George or anybody who has a kindle.

Here are amazon.com's June discounted titles. You can click on the different genres. These are for ebooks that are only discounted for June.

Watched "Brave" and then finished up "Django Unchained," so there was a lot of comic book violence on tonight.
