My brain keeps telling me there was a drug store on one side of the shop.

I remember this place had a history so I must be doing something wrong that I can't find it.

If it was a drugstore or five and dime with lunch counter, it is, sadly, probably history.  There are so few, if any of those, left.

Probably but it was also a busy lunch place so I would expect a name change or renovation while leaving the counter intact.

I give up.

Someone asked the other day about my nephew. He's going to be on American Ninja Warrior Sunday night on the G4 cable channel and then on NBC on Monday.

Had maybe the best second rehearsal we've ever had - I only had to give tiny little notes but mostly I just sat and enjoyed.  And Robert Yacko is a hero - came in knowing the two songs' music and he's already singing them wonderfully.  I don't know many people who could do that.

I just got home from my niece's (7) first ever swim meet.

We had no idea what to expect. She is an excellent swimmer (at a level with a lot of 10-11 year olds) but she has never raced.

Her first race was front crawl.  They put her in the third or fourth heat. The best swimmers are in the first heat of 6. And then they randomly (?) put the other kids.  There are like 50 kids swimming from our pool in the 8 and under category. So it is crazy.  But she won her heat. I was so teary.

Then she was in the relay. But they put her with a group of pretty slow swimmers. Their team came 4th/6 in their heat.

For backstroke they put her in the first heat with the fastest swimmers.  She is very strong in backstroke. But has never raced or even tried to go fast. So we really had no idea what to expect. She finished 5th out of 6. But those were the 5 strongest backstrokers. So it was quite impressive.

She seemed quite happy.  She should get her ribbons tomorrow.

And I am home. The new film of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is quite delightful; I'm not sure that it all works, given some of the artificiality of Shakespeare's plotting, but when it's cooking, it's sheer delight. There are bits where I thought, hmm . . . La Dolce Vita or The Sopranos, Dogberry's watch transformed well to a neighborhood security unit, and Leonato's estate nicely became a Hollywood estate.

In some ways, the play is set better in a past time period; Claudio's jealousy and potential spouse abuse as well as the humiliation of Hero are too un-PC and ugly for a contemporary romantic comedy. I think the Joseph Papp production with Sam Waterston set in 1912 works better there, and April Shawhan's devastation as the wronged Hero moves me more than the situation here. I thought that Whedon let the melancholy moment of Don Pedro's proposal to Beatrice go by too quickly, but perhaps Whedon and reed Diamond didn't believe that Don Pedro was serious. I do.

Still, there was much to like and much of it is funny and speedily played like a good screwball comedy. I liked the hip Hollywood cast, particularly Clark Gregg as Leonato and Nathan Fillion as the nincompoop Dogberry.  I liked Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof, two actors I would swear I've never seen before, quite a lot as Beatrice and Benedick, and I think the film's a good transformation of one of my favorite Shakespeare plays.

This is the cover of the auction catalogue. It is 396 pages.

You can download it and look it over at your leisure.

Maybe BK will want to look over the overpriced (?) 1st editions.

I had a nice day thank you.  On Wednesday mornings I usually hike with a group.  Today we went up to Mt. Ashland to hike where is was somewhat cooler.  We didn't do my favorite part of the trail but it was still lovely and there were lots of wildflowers.

Until later!

My question for ASK BK day....since we can also ask other Dear Reader's.....where were you born.....and where do you live now....and how many states have you lived in in between?

Mine is easy:  Indiana.

Seattle, WA

Four states - Washington, Oregon, California, and New Jersey

Thanks, Elmore, for the notes on Much Ado. Did you see the other modern day version that the BBC filmed a few years back? It had Damien Lewis back before not too many people knew who he was. I loved that version and am looking forward to seeing this one. Maybe this weekend.

I am embarrassed to admit this, especially here, but.... here goes:

Although I have been in The Music Man on stage, I have never seen the movie.

Perhaps I should remedy this tomorrow.     :P

Not the version with Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth in it.

That's nice, DR Jane.  There's some parts of New Haven that aren't so great, as I'm sure you know. But the Yale campus is beautiful, of course, and there's that amazing selection of world cuisine restaurants. I love this area for its four distinct seasons.

We had season tickets to the Shubert Theater and saw some wonderful shows. My favorite, that I saw with the boys since Keith was out of the country, was Tommy Tune in "Bye Bye Birdie".
Yes, the restaurants were wonderful as were the Pizza places.  There was also an old fashioned soda counter with the best Vanilla Malt.  In fact it is the only vanilla malt I have ever liked. :)
We didn't go very often and we were very careful what areas we were in.

I could go for an old-fashioned ice cream soda right now. Cherry, with vanilla ice cream.
