I just discovered that my high school yearbooks have not been uploaded for viewing, so I doubt I'll have any photos from that time period. Was surprised to find that the 1960-1975 and 1983 yearbooks were included. Somehow my high school history was overlooked. (Yeah!)

More re the restaurants and food:

BK, why did Lawry's move across the street, however many years ago that was?  I'm looking at the website where they have a few pictures of the current interior, and it's nice and all that, certainly in the spirit of the old, but -- of course it's not quite the same.  That was SUCH a special thing, going to Lawry's, and partly for that special ambiance.  And today's prices .... wow.

I'm happy and relieved to know the Tam o' Shanter is alive and well.  I think the only times I was in there were for after-work get-togethers and such, never for a regular old sit-down meal.  But I loved the place.

Great avatar, Matthew.

Sitting in the booth running playback for Beauty and the Beast Jr - the joys of a MD doing a camp show without an orchestra... which I'm totally fine with and I don't mean that to begin a discussion about using recorded music in a show!

That looks like the original Lawry's building on Bing Maps, with the carport entry.  But maybe not?

But my god, that stretch of La Cienega is just GONE.  Like the Golden Triangle, itself.

Hee, hee! That truly is how you were dressed when I first met you in NYC, when I got off of the bus. Of course you were holding that big sign that said "go back home."

I never did figure that one out.

I can't remember exactly why Lawry's moved across the street but I believe it happened sometime in the early 1970s.  They moved into what was, in my childhood, Richlor's, another great place - I have a menu - we ate at Richlor's much more than Lawry's actually.

A few more notes:

I certainly remember enjoying Chicken Kiev, but with no particular restaurant in mind.  Corned Beef Hash, too, but that's a tricky dish.  And since having it at the Carnegie Deli, I've been spoiled ever since.  I think it's high time I had another.

A&W -- thankfully, alive and well, if at horribly modern little jernts shared with Long John Silver's.  But I can assure you all that the root beer in frosty mugs is as wonderful as when I discovered it at the actual A&W drive-ins in Fort Lauderdale, ca 1962.  (I later enjoyed same at an A&W drive-in out on Wilshire (I think) in Santa Monica (I think).  There is still a wonderful original A&W stand in Lake George, NY.

Los Angeles. November, 1971.  I don't know why I am wearing what appears to be my mother's fur coat.

Well, the new copies of the UK The Cuckoo's Calling have flooded the market and all those eBay sellers who were praying they'd be first editions are done for - they say "Reprinted (twice).  So, now they all have to say "first edition, later printing" which is, of course, nonsense.  Once a book goes into a subsequent printing it is not a first edition.  But these people aren't really dealers so what do they know.  It's also interesting that UK firsts seem to have topped out - there are two up with Buy it Now on them - they've been unsold for two days and the price is just around a thousand.  Also, a bunch of dealers who were clearly stating the first edition only had a run of 1500 have stopped saying that - because from the get-go what the publisher was saying was it had SOLD only about that number - that doesn't mean the number of books printed was that number.  However, anything under 5,000 will keep it a rarity that will either hold where it is or eventually go up if she continues to write this series, which she says she is.  There are tons of UK firsts now on eBay, few with Buy It Now, just hoping it will go insane in the last minutes of those auctions.  It will be interesting to see where they end up.  The bids range from a couple hundred to about six hundred, but I would be surprised if any closed at those prices.  Meanwhile, the ABE still has almost no copies at all and they've sold several at 1500, which is why those 1,000 copies with Buy it Now not selling is kind of interesting.  There is also a signed copy up at a more reasonable price - just over two, but that seller took away the Buy It Now option, so no one will be getting that.  I'd like to know just how many she signed.

If I'm not totally screwed up with this one particular memory, they were still in there as late as 1987.  The move happened either soon thereafter, or even after I'd left L.A. in mid-1989.  Now of course we have to find out.

Also, re A&W, the cheeseburger there is actually one of my favorite "ordinary" cheeseburgers anywhere, and I still identify the ones now with those enjoyed in the 1960s.

That Piece o' Pizza looks SO familiar, even if I'm not sure I ever had any from there.  But if it was that ubiquitous, I probably did.  My favorite pizza in my earlier California days was at the Two Guys From Italy behind Hollywood Blvd. near Las Palmas.  It might not have been anything special, but I loved it.  But I really loved that little jernt.

In November of 1971 I was 18 years old and had graduated from high school the previous June (1971). I was not, at that time, going to University.

I thought so to, but it's not on the site, even if it is sold out.  Was going to mention it on the Forgotten Musical's thread about "Aldonza's" and then plug Kritzerland to be able to purchase it.  But if it's sold out, then I won't bother.

Here's a bit of the background behind the J.K. Rowling leak (and it wasn't Rowling):
