TOD: Earliest memories of a trip to an amusement park was to Coney Island near Cincinnati. It is now Kings Island and I believe that an episode of the Partridge Family was filmed there.

I am not a roller coaster person, and the horrible accident that occurred this weekend will likely prevent me from ever going on a roller coaster again. I also don't care for things that turn me upside down. That said, I love the Ferris wheel and the swings. And that tube you get in where they spin you around and then drop the floor out from under you.

I was never big on merry-go-rounds, with the exception of the one in Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train.

I will sanitize this story for this here site:

During WWII, when Jackie Coogan was in the army, when he met guys he would say:  "How would you like to shake the hand that shook the penis that boinked Betty Grable?"

He stopped saying it when a smart aleck recruit asked: "Whose penis was it?"

My first amusement park was named Riverside in Indianapolis.....not very clean and the people there weren't very friendly....it was kind of a scary place....and got scarier every year.  We only went a couple of times before King's Island opened in Ohio....then we went there!

Here is a picture of the Thriller roller coaster at Riverside sometime in the mid 1970's just before it was all torn down.

And in better days:

TOD:

We didn't have amusement parks anywhere near where I grew up.  We'd have all the rides at the County fair each year, and I enjoyed the Boardwalk at Daytona Beach for one week each summer (usually the 4th of July week).  The rides were okay there, but it was the "amusements"...games and such...that kept me entertained...especiallly Skee-Ball.

In my mid-teens, I enjoyed the amusement park at Myrtle Beach SC...especially the roller coaster I'd have paid double to get off at the top of the first rise.  After the complete ride, however, I was in love with the thrill of it all.

And, yes, this weeken's accident is exactly why I'd never do it again.  There is something to be said for being young and stupid!  But far more can be said about being sadder but wiser.

In the last Filichia column at Kritzerland, he discusses the Goodspeed Opera House's production of "Hello, Dolly!" with Klea Blackhurst and writes:

Even when she joins the chorus in “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” her voice stands out – not in that obnoxious way that Julie Andrews sounds when she’s showing off at the end of “Edelweiss.” Blackhurst is simply being a good team player who’s doing her job in singing; can she help it if her voice just happens to be heard among the rest?

For the record, and of course it's only my opinion, Julie Andres was never, in any way, obnoxious in her vocals for "The Sound of Music"...and I have always adored that she went up an octave on those final notes of "Edelweiss" at the folk festival.  In fact, since the entire audience was singing, too, it reminded you that the Von Trapp family was on the stage singing.

There, I've said it and feel much better.

I was thinking that was the more logical explanation of the story.

I finally broke down and got the Sepia CD of Julie Andrews and Giorgio Tozzi singing "Rose-Marie." I hadn't heard that recording in years and all I can say is she can sing any way she wants.

I was up at nine and the sprinklers, as I knew they wouldn't be, didn't come on.  Which means there hasn't been water since last Wednesday - I don't know why setting the timers on this box is so difficult that only one person can do it, but I've called that person and he's coming here at noon.  I won't be here, but hopefully he'll let each station do its job today.

Sprinklers just came on - thirty-five minutes later than they used to, so apparently the sprinkler guy, who told me they were set exactly as they had been, which was nine, has his watch off by thirty-five minutes.

Bruce does the little place on Pico count as an amusement park?  I loved the roller coaster most of all.

Actually, when I lived on Blackburn in Los Angeles, I owned a house that was built by the guy who shook the penis that boinked Betty Grable.

In fact, BK visited that house that was built by the guy who shook the penis that boinked Betty Grable.

TOD:  The best part of living in the Los Angeles area for my 5-year old self was that we would go to Disneyland Anaheim about 2 to 3 times per year. I was always so excited, and it never got old! I think my favorites (at the time) were the Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and the Teacups. I actually liked "It's a Small World," too. But I'm funny that way.

I certainly agree that Julie Andrews can sing any way she wants to sing....I wasn't listening to Edelweiss to hear all of the dubbed voices anyway.....

For some reason, I had this phobia about the "World of Tomorrow" ride (is that the right name?) in Tomorrowland. I was scared that I was going to be shrunk down to microscopic size, and what if they couldn't undo it?     :)

Someone called this morning to make an offer on the boat I have for sale.

Except that I don't have a boat.  And so it's not for sale.  I am hoping he dialed the wrong number and that MY number isn't posted somewhere....  Only the one call, so I am guessing, fat fingers on the cell phone....

Monday afternoon greetings!  I was up and out of the house by 10 in order to get some errands done before the rain started.  Almost made it, but I drove through some torrential rain just north of home.  Think I'll stay in the rest of the day.

I love rollercoasters of any and all sorts, but the DH does not, and so I rarely have an opportunity to go on them. And this weekend's accident notwithstanding, I still would, if I had a chance. But I'm funny that way.

I really should go to Kings Island someday.  All the years I've driven past it ..... and it was only a couple of years ago that I even learned that many (?) of the Coney Island rides were relocated there.  To the best of my knowledge, I was never at the old Coney Island.  (We're talking the Ohio one here, folks.)

TOD - my first memory of a ride was the old-fashioned carousel at Great Falls of the Potomac, which I rode when our family was visiting Washington, DC, when I was almost 7.  From Detroit, we'd board a boat and cruise downriver to Boblo Island Amusement Park, but I was not much of a daredevil.  Didn't go on a roller coaster until my sister and I took her kids to Kings Island after I'd moved to SW Ohio in my early 20s.  With Richard and Rob, I've had great fun on the water-flumes, especially the then-new Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios California in 1996.  Nowadays, I avoid most of the thrill rides, for cardiac reasons  ::)
