DR Jane I thought you'd finished the library ebook already. I don't see how they can remove it unless you connect to the internet. But I guess it could just expire after X amount of days.

TOD:

As I recall, one of the first websites I visited was the imdb.  Also, something called "Screenwriter's Utopia".

I was woke up the morning to the "music" of all the smoke alarms going off.

My wife decided to clean the oven this morning, but forgot to turn on the fan.

Good morning, all!  I feel like garbage today. My plan to cut off the flexerill last night failed. I went to bed at 10pm, decided around 11:30 I had better take the medication, which kicked in about midnight and my left foot stopped throbbing.  I then dozed fitfully until 2:45am or so, when I took an ant-acid tablet.  I slept until 7 this morning, and tried unsuccessfully to sleep until 9. I have physical therapy at 11, so I'll leave here in about 45 minutes, but I really want to do is rebook for tomorrow and go back to bed.

As for the remainder of my day, I need to call the corner bodega for a delivery of a few groceries.  Bruce Pomahac may come by to visit, but that all depends on my mood after therapy.  At the moment, I'd rather sleep than visit.

DR Jennifer, not all of the Emmy Awards are presented on tv, just like the Tonys, and the unglamorous awards that the networks and sponsors feel the viewing public won't give a damn for are being given this weekend.

I got on the inner web in 1998.  I had visited my sister who had a computer and was fascinated by the websites and information.

I bought a no name IBM clone - I think is had 512 MB Ram and who knows how much memory....not much.  I had had a small Tandy computer that used 5 1/4" floppy discs that I used for a lot of word processing, but the modem was like 28.8 and my brother in law said that I needed a faster modem to get on the inner web.  The Tandy was given away....and I think the person who took it just wanted to sell it....

I also used free dial up - Freeweb.....you paid $99 for the disc, and then the connection was free.  I had a dedicated telephone line put in....

I was confused by Usenet.....so I didn't go there much.

I got on the interwebs in about '98 or '99.  I used to hang around the Broadway, filmscore, and some other pages.  But, after a half-dozen or so years of that, I became disillusioned with the 'net in general, generally and specifically because of the truculence and intolerance that seemed to breed like a virus on it.

But, now, I'm back.  In a much diminished presence.  I have a Facebook page and everything!  But sometimes, I miss the 'net-free days of the past.

TOD:

I agree with your nostalgia of the web-free days, Robin, though I like my web families and I enjoy being in touch with people I haven't heard from or seen in ages.

Now I feel somehow disconnected when I'm in a tiny Texas town and can't share photos of the barbecue immediately with people.

I first got on the web because it was part of my job as religion/TV editor at the last paper. I had created a new entertainment magazine for the paper and the Internet was a big part of it, so I had to write stuff on it for that. For a year or so, it was drudgery work, as I tried to think of topics that were of interest that I could find any info or sites on.

That may have been how I found BK's last label, after someone had given me the CD "A Broadway Christmas." I remember writing pieces on Jacqueline Susann sites, cooking (of course), John Waters movies, Hunter S. Thompson, Luther's Reformation, nostalgic radio, you name it.

BK, I loved the notes today. The internet is such an interesting thing, and something most of us would never have even imagined 30 years ago.

My first computer was a Compaq, and like everyone else I started out with dial up access. I used AOL, which I still use for email.

Usenet/newsgroups were something I always heard about, but could never figure out where to find them or how they worked.

The first websites I looked at were the Internet Movie Database and a fun B Monster Movie website that a friend had told me about. Soon, Ebay caught my attention, and the selling of an Allison Hayes 8x10 still led to my meeting DR JRand! JRand bought several movie stills from me those first few years on Ebay...his excellent taste in movie memorabilia made me realize I had found a top quality internet buddy!

I am home and very happy that I went to physical therapy. I'm developing a phobia about leaving the apartment, and I think it's good to deal with this problem before I end up a prisoner here. A car service drove me to 95th Street and I was lucky to catch the first cab coming down Columbus Avenue.

Back to bed!

The tour of ANYTHING GOES is hitting Portland, Oregon next month and I am hoping to take my grand niece Taylor to see it. She so loved seeing MEMPHIS last year.

While I was made merciless fun of for using Web TV on these groups, the fact is when I got my laptop and tried to do Usenet on it, it was a joke - when I saw what these people were looking at when using other browsers it was a joke and totally confusing.  On Web TV it was all laid out perfectly and very easy to follow.  Oops.

DR ChasSmith, so glad you got to check out The Original Pancake House. We have two of them here in Salem, Oregon, 97301 (well, actually they are in 97302 and 97305). So many kinds of pancakes! I especially love their Nebraska Corn Pancakes.

When my buddy Mark was living here we would eat breakfast there almost once a week.
