DR TCB, I agree with DR Cillaliz - don't give up. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.

TOD

I used to go for things like eclairs, napoleons, cream horns, etc.  Somewhere along the line I either had a few disappointing ones or I just got tired of them.  But those horns in the picture look excellent.  I shall have to go seek out a few horns or something today.

I'm trying to think of places I used to go specifically for that kind of pastry.  Walter's Tea Room and Pastry Shop, or whatever the actual name was, in Beverly Hills.  On this coast, I remember one called Eclair, on West 72nd Street -- maybe DR Elmore knew it -- I think it was in the block east of Broadway, north side of the street.

I voted in the runoff for Public Advocate. I'm sure I was one of 10s casting my vote.

I'm gluten free, so I don't eat pastries any more.

However, I used to love cheese danish.

SPOILER AHEAD:

I remember THE BIG COMBO.  It's okay, not terrific.

The one scene that sticks in my memory is the one in which Brian Donlevy gets killed.

TOD:

Probably a donut.....probably from Biff's the bakery in town that is still in business and still selling the same stuff.....well - newly baked or fried or whatever they do to it.

They have cream horns which are very good and very flaky.

TOD

I commented on the horns but didn't really answer the question.

First pastries (other than birthday cakes, cupcakes, and the like) were almost certainly doughnuts.  Usually went for the glazed and cruller varieties, and -- guess what, I still do!  Though I do actually like many kinds.

First memories include a "cold" "winter" Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale, listening to a re-broadcast of the Messiah we had attended previously, me in seventh heaven over both the music and the box of doughnuts my dad had brought home which was kind of a rare treat back then.  Skip ahead to one of my college years in Cleveland, when I lived near a Mister Donuts and got addicted to sitting at their counter eating the glazed and crullers and drinking their wonderful coffee from regular, you know, ceramic mugs.  Delicious.  And then skip ahead a bunch more years to discovering Dunkin' Donuts' coffee, also served in wonderful ceramic mugs so you could actually TASTE it.  I so miss that.

Of course in my L.A. years I became infatuated with Stan's Donuts and the wonderful varieties they offered.  Yes sirree, I do love me my doughnuts.

Definitely going out today for some pastry or other.  I need a treat.

TOD:  Sigh.

Currently, nothing is better to me than a "morning bun", but my head can be turned by a warm chocolatine from the French patisserie "La Farine".

Other favorites have included Krispy Kreme donuts just off the glazing belt (the enjoyment now would be short-lived because the leaden reality of the donut would soon make itself known in my stomach); chocolate èclairs (is it redundant to say "chocolate" in this case?  I've never seen an èclair in any other flavor!); extraordinary cinnamon rolls, glazed; and, the most decadent, baklava.  Ooooooooh....

Cinnamon rolls were, and still are, a HUGE favorite among breakfast pastries.  No question about it.  I love anything approaching a freshly baked cinnamon roll.  However, there was one store-bought variety I used to get at Hughes Market in Beverly Hills, that I'd give anything to have again today.  It was a "special" Van De Kamp one that came only one or two to a package.  Ate those every weekend morning, with my then-newly discovered French press coffee, for a couple of years.

Wasn't there a Stephen King story about a demonic pressing machine or something?
