I don't think I read HARVEST HOME, and I only vaguely recall the 1978 mini-series which I believe I didn't see until a repeat a few years later.

I very well remember going to FEDORA (in Westwood), really liking it, and returning a couple of times.

I have only seen FEDORA on late night network television, so I haven't really seen it, but the story was excellent.

Thanks for reminder about the radio show.  I needed to ketchup with the last one ("Happy" Couples) and am especially enjoying those selections.

I used to pick up a package of Oscar Meyer Head Cheese every now and then, as our local Safeway carries it. It doesn't really have a whole lot of taste, however. But it was something different to make my sandwiches out of.

I switched gyms a week back, but it was a mistake. The new gym not to my liking...too small, not enough machinery or selection of weights, and there is the annoyance of having to work around the zumba classes that are held right in the middle of the weight room! And the zumba teacher is the most annoying character I have ever come across...although he has a multitude of middle aged female fans who hang around and chat with him for an hour after...right in the middle of the weight room.

So, back to the YMCA...thankfully, they are letting me re-sign up, without charging me the sign up fee.

DVR'd a fun "educational" film off of TCM the other night. It was titled THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY, but should have been titled THE S & H GREEN STAMP STORY.

The plot was about a young couple (Craig Hill and Gloria Talbott) who are to engaged, only the young man doesn't want to get married until his career is set. Then he discovers that his to-be bride uses S and H Green Stamps, and Leon Erroll takes them on a tour of an S and H Green Stamps store and warehouse. All in glorious Technicolor. And With Mae Clarke as the young man's mom.

It was fun and brought back a lot of memories of those stamp books and going to the store to redeem them.

Ask BK:

It may not be politically correct to sing "I Wish I Were an Oscar-Mayer Wiener (bum-bum-bummmm)" (for those who remember the jingle when they decided to make it hip), but is there anything wrong with singing:

"My baloney has a first name
"It's O-s-c-a-r
"My baloney has a second name
"It's Mayer
"Oh, I love to eat it every day
"And if you ask me why I'll say
"That Oscar-Mayer has a way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a"

Loved the Dark Secret of Harvest Home when it first aired. I wonder if I'd find it hokey now.

By the same token, I found Fedora riotously bad when I saw it as a teenager. Wonder if I would appreciated more of it now?

I adored the film "The Other".

Of course, I had read the novel a few times before seeing the film, so I wasn't shocked at anything, but I thought they handled much of the story superbly.  Yes, there were some changes, and no, they didn't get it exactly right in the "frights" department, but it was close enough.

Uta Hagen was mesmerizing as Ada and Diana Muldaur was lovely and tragic and haunting.   A very young John Ritter was effective, as well.

But it's the Jerry Goldsmith score that sent me over the moon on this film.

Last weekend, for my birthday breakfast, I had real barbacoa, made from meat scraped from the cow's skull. Had cheek, sweetbreads from near the tongue and an eye.

If any of you remember the scene in Giant where they dig up the cooked cow's head, prompting Elizabeth Taylor's Leslie to faint in disgust, well, that was pretty much the situation, only we didn't see the skull. Just the meat.

Wednesday morning greetings!  It's another gloriously crisp, sunny fall day here in SW Ohio.  I'm taking it easy this morning and will do some errands and visit Mom this afternoon.  We have a crew here cleaning the part of our roof that faces north and gets moldy from always being in the shade.

"Harvest Home" was a great read back in its day.  I haven't revisited it in many decades, so I don't know how it holds up.   The TV movie was intriguing, but its main calling card was Bette Davis rather than the story's narrator.  I had the feeling of a lost opportunity watching the TV mini-series (it was a two-parter, yes?).

"Fedora" is a wonderful read in the four-part novel "Crowned Heads".  The movie only had a few "moments" for me....and a glorious, but badly integrated (recorded) score by Miklos Rozsa.  The segment where Bill Holden delivers the special Oscar to Fedora is the very best scene in that film...and one of the finest-scored scenes in film, period.  IMO.

Pimiento loaf, with olive, was also a fixture in our refrigerator when I was growing up, along with pimiento cheese.  This was the stuff of "lunch" in the summer, especially.  Along with tomato sandwiches.  In the fall, for some reason, it was banana and peanut butter sandwiches for lunch (on Saturdays).

To my knowledge, Oscar-Mayer has never packaged banana-peanut butter loaf.

Has anyone here ever made an olive sandwich?

Recipe:

Two slices of bread.

Mayonnaise

4-8 large pimiento-stuffed olives.

Spread mayonnaise on bread and set aside.  Using a sharp paring knife, cut olives in half, length-wise.  Place olive slices on one piece of the bread (mayo side up).  When bread is covered with olives, place the other slice of bread (mayo side down) on top.

Eat.   Serves One.

Preparation time:  5 minutes

Tomato sandwiches!  Olive sandwiches!  My mother even taught me to make onion sandwiches.  These all sound so great right now.

My mom has certainly made meals of green onions and cornbread!  I prefer my onion sandwiches be made with Vidalia Sweet Onions.

I remember growing up, my father loved the sliced deli meats with cracked pepper corns inserted into them. I had to pick the darned things out, each one of them, before I would eat these!  As an adult, I do love pepper. So maybe I would enjoy these now. If they still make them.

Yes they do, and I was the same way.  Like 'em fine now.

Good morning, all!

Last night  got one of those lovely shocks when I signed onto my Facebook page to find myself tagged in a clip of Pamela Myers and I singing "Color and Light" from "Sunday in the Park with George", at an invited dress rehearsal for the 1986 L.A. Premiere. It had been posted by our wonderful director, Fran Soeder. It seems Fran had a little hand held camera in that monstrous cavern of a theater, and has had these things stashed away ever since. Never knew about that, only about an audio recording from someone's lap during the show. It looks like he is now transferring and making clips for postings of our show and others he directed out here.

It was amazing to see, and even though the quality isn't the best, it's something I'd love to have a copy of. I tried downloading it, but it wasn't possible. I'll have to ask him for a copy.  Talk about a blast from way in the past. But that show remains a highlight in my crazy career.

Happy Hump Day to everyone!

And then of course there is Cheez-Whiz, which is very good on....SPAM.

The above images were posted to give the heebie jeebies to our food-o-philes.

Oh lord, I used to eat that stuff.

I recall an old Jay Leno routine (pre-Tonight show), when he talked about seeing all the junkies at Ralph's on Sunset in the Cheese Whiz aisle. Then he asked "How much whiz is in that stuff?"   :D

DR ryacko - if you use the Firefox browser, there is a add-on that you can use to probably download the clip.
