I believe Miss Susan Hayward got her role in I MARRIED A WITCH because Miss Frances Farmer was otherwise occupied.....but I could be wrong....

And there was the tale going around Paramount that Veronica used to go into the fan mail department a couple of times a week and shake all the nickels and dimes people sent to her for photos into her purse and then throw the letters away....

Stanley Kauffmann has died at age 97. Didn't alway agree with him, but I did enjoy reading him.

I am home from seeing my doctor:  I've lost 16 lbs, which is good news, and I have the PT referral in hand, which is even better.  Now I am craving a pumpkin muffin, bread or donut.

Very good to see the CD for sale at last!  Will be ordering forthwith!

I didn't order the forthwith, but I did order the combo pack of CDs.  I have the Cristmas album (which I love) already, but figure the additional copy would make a great gift for a very special friend.

Y.T.O.D.

I loved all of Tom Tryon's books, some more than others.  I enjoyed HARVEST HOME, but once it was finished there was little point in going back.  I think that CROWNED HEADS was my all-time favorite.  THE OTHER was not to my liking.

Mike Barnum's favorite Fredric March films may indeed be a sign of "The Rapture".  They are all Class A films!

That's a couple of pieces of damned fine news there.  Congrats on the 16 lbs.  I'm envious.  And of course congrats on the PT!

We had a special guest yesterday at the Old Actor's Lunch.  One of the member's mother-in-law was in town visiting from California.  He was going to skip the lunch, but I begged him to come and to bring here along, so that I could meet her. Back in the late 50s and early 60s this lady (writing under a pseudonym) wrote a series of six lesbian pulp fiction novels that were earth shattering to an entire generation of women.  Over the years, these books have been reissued, and today she is considered one of the pioneering authors of the LGBT revolution.

It was really an honor to meet her.

By the way, any New Yorkers who might be inerested  in meeting her, she will be apearing at the NYC Collectable Paperback & Pulp Fiction Expo on Sunday October 13.

BK,

I watched I MARRIED A WITCH the other night and, although I thought it was okay and a pleasant way to spend 77 minutes, I thought that the film could have been much funnier and better with different leads.

Yes, Fredric March was one of our finest actors and I love much of his work, but comedy was not his forte'.  He did not have the comic touch or timing of a Cary Grant or a Fred MacMurray, which is what the role required.  And, though she was always a charming screen presence, neither did Veronica Lake.  Imagine Jean Arthur, Ginger Rogers or (were she still alive then) Carole Lombard in that part.

Don't misunderstand.  I like both of these performers, but they were miscast here and, as far as I'm concerned, lacked "chemistry".  Indeed, I understand that they did not get along during filming.

On the other hand, Robert Benchley and Cecil Kellaway were delightful.  And, for the time, the special effects were excellent.

As you state in your new book, which I enjoyed (and thanks for the nice comments about ME), your idea of comedy and my idea of comedy is completely different.  And so it is with I Married a Witch - I cannot imagine two more perfect leads that Mr. March and Miss Lake and I found the entire film funny - not always laugh out loud funny, which I don't think was the intention - but funny - and occasionally it IS laugh out loud funny.  Miss Lake especially is such a unique screen presence and her look is so sexy and adorable, well, that's what makes horse racing.  And Mr. March could do anything.

"I Married A Witch" has been one of my favorite 1940s enchantments since I first saw it 30-plus years ago.  It was in yesterday's mail alongside "The Other", which I watched last night.

I loved "The Other" and even watched it through again with the isolated tracks.   It's sole CD incarnation was a bit disappointing inasmuchas it was incomplete.  I understood from somewhere -- notes on the jacket or a comment on the internet -- that what we got was all there was.   Happily, this has been rectified on the BD, and regardless of the source material, it sounds splendiferous.  It leads me to hope that someone, someday will issue it as a complete, stand-alone CD experience as it's one of my favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores and has been since I first saw the film in a theater.

Sadly, for reasons none of us can quite figure out, the studio who licensed The Other to Varese (along with all the titles we did in the two years I supervised those releases) licensed that stuff in perpetuity, which means no one but them is going to put out The Other complete.  You would think that would have put that high on the radar, being a Goldsmith title, but alas, not.
