T.O.D.

Books

I think the scariest book I have ever read is GHST STORY  (or GHOUST STORY in England) by Peter Straub.  Unfortunately, the movie was good, but it didn't live up to the terror of the book.  Still, having Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman was pretty cool; with a brief bit of full frontal nudity from Craig Wasson.

THE EXCORCIST by William Peter Blatty.  I made th mistake of seeing the fim before I read the book, so when I read it, all of the horror of the film carried over.  My bedroom had been converted from an old porch, so the light switch was clear across the room from my bed.  One night I said, "Screw it," and slept with the light on,

I enjoyed Ghost Story because of the cast, but, you're right, it wasn't very scary, so I never read the book. Now that I've forgotten most of the plot, I wonder if I find the book scary now?

Watched Mr. Skeffington last night too.  Very good but a little long, IMHO.

Happily, I got the new cast album of Carrie free - for the most part it's just a bore and I especially am tired of the gal who does the vocal arrangements for all the "hip" "rock" shows - everyone sings in fourths and fifths and it's completely tiresome.  But who didn't know that every community theater and small theater group wouldn't be doing this show?  They think they're being cutting edge - obviously if looked at realistically one would know it's a dog, but still they line up to do it.  And usually the "critics" in those cities can't wait to say how brilliant it is.

Had a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and a cup of soup with the Darling Daughter.  Just trying to relax now until rehearsal.

I watched supernatural Bollywood film over the weekend, titled GHOST.

It got terrible reviews in India and was a tad controversial because the leading man, Shiney Ahuha, who was a fairly big Bollywood star just a year back, was indicted for raping his maid, and that basically ended his career overnight.

GHOST was the first movie (only movie, it would appear) that he has done since the incident, which I believe is still on going via the courts. The director of GHOST had nothing good to say about Shiney as his constant lateness and unprofessionalism made the film go way over budget (and it was only meant to  be a B grade film). His leading lady also had some bad words for him, although she later retracted them.

Anyway, despite all of that, the film was great fun, pretty spooky in places, and a little too gory in spots. But I would watch it again, no problem.

6:30pm and the damned postman finally arrives. It's not our usual, and God knows where that sack of bullshit manager of my post office finds 'em.  I'm expecting a check, which I thought might arrive today, and of course it's way too late to make a bank deposit. Goddam.

No wonder the US Postal System is in trouble.

Do any DR"S utilize the library to borrow books and DVD"S?

I basically watch all my dvds this way. My library gets most new releases. And it is free to borrow.

Does your library get the old classics?  I wonder if it has "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland.

The handyman is working on week two at our house which includes dry walling & painting.  Today he used a primer that really stinks.  I got out of the house for awhile and went for a swim.  I need to get out of this room and go as far away in the house as I can get from it.

6:45pm, and I have the check, which I cannot deposit until tomorrow, along with the other mail and a few packages. The postman dropped all the magazines and parcels on the floor under the postboxes, so you had t sort through to see if any were for you.

The manager of my local post office is a two-faced windbag who does as little as possible beyond establishing ridiculous situations at the station for her employees to deal with and I live for her retirement before someone murders her on grounds of terminal stupidity.

I also watched The Bad Seed the other day on TCM, even though I have it on DVD.  It's one of my favorites.  Eileen Heckart is outstanding, not to mention Patty McCormack and Nancy Kelly, though Nancy is practically hysterical from the very beginning.  I know her over-the-top performance has been discussed for years.    Henry Jones was great too.

The man on the recording at Sterling's (for the upcoming Kritzerland show) says the dress code is "cocktail/upscale casual."  I hope I wear the right thing!

DR Jane - I guess it is too late now, but too bad you can't request that your handyman use one of the new "fume-less" paints.
