At a dress rehearsal (not an actual performance, thank goodness) of Man of LaMancha, I was supposed to look across the stage and see my Aldonza for the first time - only she wasn't there. She had gone out to get a drink of water at the water fountain in the hall, and the stage door had locked behind her - she couldn't get back in! I had to improvise for at least 2 minutes while this was being sorted out. Felt like the longest 2 minutes of my life. But I stayed in character!     :)

Good morning, all! 6:30 came far too early this morning. I am off to Toyland, and I hope there will not be too much angst and turmoil trying to hop a bus when I leave there today.

At this point, I have no more news. I do need more coffee, though.

I liked DR SINGDAW's story......

TOD:  Many funny things.....but....

During the finale of 42nd STREET one evening at Putnam County Playhouse, my cousin Brad who was playing Billy was getting ready to go on, and he said "Oh, my pants button came off...."   I tried to hold him from going onstage until I got a safety pin, but he said: "I have to go, I have a lift coming up...."  So off he went.....  Less than 30 seconds later the audience started laughing, and I knew what was happening....  Yes, it was the tap dance with no pants on.....

I had the first line after the number which was one of the biggest laughs I have ever gotten.  I came out and declared:  "What an opening!"

We all survived.

From Today.

My Maintenance was scheduled  to come between 8:00am and 12:00pm. Well they arrived at 8:08 and I was still in bed. They always seemed to arrive at 11:50am all the other time they came.

This happened to me.
Many moons ago I was playing L.A. in "Gypsy". We have a quick change when the young chorus boys morph into the older ones and the Eggroll Mr. Goldstone scene. On the first matinee performance one of the techs moved my costume and my prop. Well I found the costume but not the prop. I missed my entrance. Luckily my friend was playing Rose and she told me to come in with her. Well we entered through the bathroom together and there was laughter.

When it came to the missing prop I was supposed to give Louise a stuffed cat (which she later sings about in "Little Lamb". I improvised by saying I had a stuffed cat to give to her but I lost it.

On Broadway,

The musical On the 20th Century. Imogene Coca was in one of the state room and she was supposed to leave and the door handle came off in her hand. She tried to get out as the action progressed in the next state room. She then stepped off the set and snuck around it. The audience laughed and applauded much to the wonderment of the other actors.

I hate the "fake" stuff. I remember in Will Rogers Follies. Mrs. Rogers was downstage right doing something. (No longer what it was) and in the middle the dogs (from the dog act) run across the stage and the actress playing the part breaks character and laughs. Of course this is done at every performance.

MOTOWN's Playbill had a whole page of substitutions last night, but it didn't really matter - we weren't there to see anyone in particular.  The show was lively and fun, but a little too long.
