I had the first line after the number which was one of the biggest laughs I have ever gotten.  I came out and declared:  "What an opening!"

I daresay (oh yes, I daresay) DR Ginny knows a thing or two about Motown.

Ah, yes - I even remembered the WJBK DJ!

TOD:

A friend of mine had a gig playing one of the two organ consoles on either side of the stage for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. Most people don't know it, but only one of the two consoles can actually control the pipes at any one time. So when you see two people playing, one of them is faking it. My friend and the other organist used to take turns doing the "real" playing, throwing it back and forth.

In any case, it is a factory - many, many shows each day. One performance they were playing the "pre" music, when just as they were to conclude and the show was about to start, everyone heard a tremendous C-R-A-S-H from behind the show curtain. Immediately, the stage manager's voice came through over his earphone...   "KEEP PLAYING!"        ;D

I can't think of anything too exceptional that I've witnessed myself.  But I have always been extremely fond of PETER PAN disaster stories -- some of which I suspect are apocryphal, but which are hilarious ideas nonetheless.

Nothing like video evidence, though:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_kx3byv8ow

TOD:

Here's a short section from my new book, LIFE. LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD: More of My Wacky Adventures in Tinseltown, which certainly addresses BK's "Topic of the Day":

Undoubtedly, the most outrageous stage flub I ever witnessed was
in a performance of The Desperate Hours, presented at an Equity Waiver
theater in West Hollywood. This was a play with which I was familiar. Not
only had I seen the national company perform it when I was a kid in Seattle,
but I am a fan of the 1955 movie that had starred Humphrey Bogart,
Fredric March and Arthur Kennedy.

I was at this new production because one of my publicity clients,
Larry Pennell, was playing the Arthur Kennedy role.

Based on a true story, The Desperate Hours by Joseph Hayes is about
a trio of escaped convicts, led by Bogart in the movie, who take over a
suburban household and hold the family hostage, as they plan their final
getaway. In the William Wyler-directed film, March played the father and
Kennedy was the chief cop trying to catch the criminals.

In the play’s climactic moments, one of the convicts has been killed,
the police have surrounded the family’s home, the wife and grown daughter
have been brought to safety, and the father (March) has just forced one
of the remaining convicts, played in the movie by Robert Middleton, out
of the house into a hail of police bullets.

As the Middleton character is ejected from the house, he drops his
gun inside. The father retrieves the weapon, and then goes upstairs to
confront the Bogart character, who is still holding March’s young son with
a gun that he doesn’t know is not loaded.

I don’t recall the names of the actors who played the convicts in the
Equity Waiver production I saw, but the father was Don Dubbins, a skilled
performer and a familiar face on episodic television, but perhaps best remembered
for a couple of films he made back in the 1950s, Tribute to a
Bad Man
starring Jimmy Cagney and The D.I. with Jack Webb.

Now, picture this:

In the performance of the play that I attended, Dubbins forces the
convict (the Middleton character) out of the house, but the actor playing
that role neglected to drop his gun. Dubbins, after desperately looking
about the stage for the absent prop, now must mount the stairs and confront
the Bogart character without a weapon.

Knowing the play as well as I did and realizing what had happened,
I cannot express how badly I felt for Dubbins at that moment. In what
should have been the play’s most intense scene, he was now forced to
ask the Bogart character “nicely” to release his son and get out of his
house.

I encountered Dubbins at a party a year or two later, and reminded
him of that incident, which he said was the “most painful” moment he’d
ever spent on stage.

Today are auditions for Young Frankenstein.   I finally watched the movie last night, and am pretty familiar with the Broadway score.  I guess I liked the movie, but I don't know why people rave about it.  It's clever more than funny, I think.

I need to rise up off of my arse and get some things done around here today, especially with such beautiful weather.  For instance, getting further along in reorganizing the garage and basement.  They've been neglected, and gotten further messed up, with all the activity surrounding the installation of the generator.  Should get out and blow some leaves, too.  (Sorry, those who hate the sound of leaf blowers.  There ain't no other way to keep up with them in these parts.)

Good morning, all!

TOD:  Oh, lord, where do I begin with these stories?

One of my favorites came from being on tour with FIDDLER ON THE ROOF with Herschel Bernardi as Tevye. I was just out of school and was cast as a double understudy for Perchik and Fyedka, as well as being in the ensemble. They decided to break up the Fyedka understudy (the regular Fyedka did both the scenes and the Russian solo in "To Life") and give the Russian solo to another young strapping actor with a great voice.

Well said young actor was party boy and the first time I went on for Fyedka, he was, of course, to do his first solo. He stood up on the table in the appropriate moment, sang out the long high G that begins the solo, held it nice and long, then proceeded to pass out and slide down the solid "Inn" wall behind him. Two of us grabbed him by the shirt to keep him from falling completely, and I jumped in to sing the rest of the solo.

By the time the solo was done, the passed out actor had awakened with a startled look on his face, jumped off the table, and finished the dance with Tevye. Then, he ran off stage horrified.

The best part was seeing Herschel's jaw on the floor as all of this unfolded.

T.O.D.

When I was doing When I was playing THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, we were using one of those old wicker wheelchairs, and it gave us countless problems.  Near the end of the run, during the scene with the actress, she crossed stage left and I was supposed to follow her.  I had just started rolling, when there was a big clunk, and one of the big wheels fell off the chair.  That was bad enough but the wheel kept rollng along, and eventually ran right into the actress' rear end.  There was nothing we could do, the audience was hysterical, the actress was hysterical, and I just sat there.

Thank you for all the travel vibes.  We've made our way to our departure gate at Newark, three hours early.  Richard is off finding himself some lunch and I'll go when he comes back.

I have to say:  I <heart> TSA Pre-check!

We took the bus - $8 apiece each way with the senior discount - a great deal!  We didn't sign up for anything special, but both ways our boarding passes were marked for easy-check.  You don't have to remove your shoes or inner jackets and electronic devices can stay in your bags.  They did swab my hands, I suspect because I'd replaced the plug-in air freshener when we left the apartment.  Must have mimicked GSR!
