TOD:

"Hannah and Her Sisters" -- This is Woody at "perfection" level on all counts -- story, script, performers/performances, combination of humor/wit/drama, and on an equal level his music selection. Woody, Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Dianne Wiest, Michael Caine, Maureen O'Sullivan, Lloyd Nolan, and all the other superb supporting cast are absolutely riveting throughout the film. I have many "favorite" scenes in this film, but my "most favorite" is Woody spying Dianne Wiest (Holly) in a record shop and going in to remind her of the worst date of his life. It's an amazing, very funny, beautiful scene.

"Manhattan" -- This is the finest valentine ever filmed to/for a city (or anything/anyone else). The Gordon Willis b/w cinematography is masterful, the Gershwin score is sublime and the story is very New York and very Woody (and not a little bit disturbing given Allen's romance with a teenager, wonderfully played by Mariel Hemingway at her most beautiful).

"Love and Death" -- Hilarious homage to Ingmar Bergman with some fantastic sight gags, silliness, mayhem and an hysterical "Death" giving Woody the sort of "ending" he obsesses upon in nearly all his personal films.

"The Purple Rose of Cairo" - Wonderful "little movie", filmed to perfection. Great central performance by Mia Farrow and wonderful conceit of movie character coming off the screen because a "real person" has seen the film so many times he just had to say something. This movie was a "gift" when it was released and always seems to be a "gift" upon repeat viewings.

"Annie Hall" -- I'm not the biggest fan of this film, although it IS wonderful and funny and kooky and brilliantly done. Woody has had better stories, but it's the central character and Woody's interactions with her that make the film work wonderfully.

Last night we watched THE WORDS, starring Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons.

I thought it was good and I think I figured out the mystery just before it ended.

Have any DR"S seen it?

TOD:

Manhattan
Annie Hall
Midnight in Paris (although I'd cast someone other than Owen Wilson in the lead)

Happy to hear the intermission might be going back in.

I love an intermission.  I much prefer going to the theatre when there is an intermission.

When MAN OF LA MANCHA openned off-Broadway, the critics praised the inventiveness of the show being ddne without an Intermission.  When told about the comments, writer Dale Wasserman said, "The only reaason there is no  intermission, is that I was afraid that it would give the audience a chance to leave early."

I'm thinking of seeing GRAVITY before it leaves the theaters.  Which version should I watch it in?  I'm thinking 3D is the favorite.

I would much prefer to not have an intermission when the show was written to not have an intermission.

Hello, fellow Dear Readers. I have missed you all! I do not yet have wifi or the computer set up, but wanted.to let all of you know that I (and all my stuff) arived safe & sound in St. Paul - move-in day on Saturday was a balmy 7 degrees. The neighborhood, house, and apartment are beautiful, and lovelier than I ever could have dreamed of.  I know that we will be very happy here. Looking forward to being back with you regularly very shortly. Thanks for all your support and good wishes, and see you all very soon!

Welcome home, SchwingPaw!!

And I am home from physical therapy, which was not crowded beyond belief but will be on Wednesday, and a stop at the bank for some funds and an investment inquiry.

This whole nonsense with my brothers and that damned property has really screwed up things; I have no idea on how to proceed.  What i would like to do is sue my brothers for hindering rather than promoting its sale and my dad's attorney for letting him sign it over to us on his deathbed, knowing that we'd end up having to pay inheritance taxes on it, no matter what. In my current financial mess, I am in a murderous frame of mind over the whole megillah.

DR Ginny braved Kroger while I was braving Trader Joe's and Shop Rite.

I wouldn't want to go near any of these places again between now and Friday!     :)

My DVD player died today during the middle of "A Touch of Class," which is a really charrming reminder of how good Glenda Jackson was in her prime. Guess it's time to upgrade to that Blu-Ray player.

Press THAT in your book of memories.

Happy Monday, all!

TOD - so many.

Always loved the wacky early films, like TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN, SLEEPER AND BANANAS.

ANNIE HALL remains a favorite. at least in memory. I really should go back and re-watch these again. I do recall some of the lines from this film, like "Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym."

Also loved HANNAH AND HER SISTERS and BULLETS OVER BROADWAY.

What is the term for seeing something that defies your belief in someone or something......I saw it written down a few weeks ago, and now I can't remember what it was....it was two words, I think....at least.....

DR JRand, did you get a gander at that rather revealing negative of Allison Hayes that is up for bid on Ebay? Allison was certainly not shy. I would love to know more about what led her to do some of those photo shoots.

When I was in college (to become a choir teacher...which, obviously, DIDN'T happen), I had a psychology instructor who quoted:

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.
Those who can't teach, teach teachers to teach.

That's the second one that's been up.....last week there was one that was even more revealing.  I think there were a lot of magazines that published pictures like that.....probably in Europe moreso than the US....
