Ladies and germs, I'm off to see WHITE CHRISTMAS on the big screen. I know the existing Blu-ray is supposed to be a great transfer (I have it but haven't watched it on the good screen), so this ought to be quite amazingly good, don't you think? Let's hope so!
Saw it on the big screen a few years back and loved it. Hope you enjoy.
It was well worth seeing. This theater does very well in the projection department. But what I always end up telling one of the managers is that for these vintage films, they need to crank the volume. You sit through the usual trailers, etc., all played at a typical volume for stuff nowadays, then the Paramount VistaVision fanfare starts up, sounding like it's in the next room. And this film is (always surprising to me) center speaker mono, so it just seems so puny until your ears adapt to it. But adapt they did, and the audience of (count 'em!) twelve (12) loved every minute of it.
When I got home I threw my Blu-ray in just to compare whatever I could with what I'd just seen, and it really is beautiful. And the audio was way more satisfying, both on the mono and the (simulated?) 5.1 stereo. I think simulated, because even original stereo prints were that "Perspecta" thing which I believe was sort of an operator-manipulated mono.
