I liked the LIVE The Sound of Music last night.  The lighting and sound were a bit off....and Audra MacDonald made some scary faces while she sang CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN - but maybe that's her idea of acting.

AND the guy playing a small role...The Admiral....totally went up on his lines near the end of the show.....

If you like the show.....you'll like the broadcast, it's just a different version of the musical....Carrie can't act - where was her help in this area....  And three of the Von Trapp girls got hit with an ugly stick.....

But it was very fun to watch.

Jon Cypher in the Julie Andrews broadcast went up on his lines at one spot, too. It's on the DVD for all to see. A hazard of live tv.

I wondered if Carrie might not have come off better from a theatre seat rather than from somewhere around her tonsils. She didn't offend me. I've seen worse performances on Broadway un the past 40 years, including:
Cher (COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME)
Elizabeth Taylor (THE LITTLE FOXES)
Victoria Clark (TITANIC)
Bernadette Peters (ANNIE GET YOUR GUN)
Elizabeth Wilson (THREEPENNY OPERA)

  • The 1st HHW God!

I did watch "The Sound of Music" last night.

It was the first time I've seen it "near" its original theatrical form, although why they didn't stick to the original and drop the maudlin "Something Good" (Nothing comes from nothing...nothing ever could!!!!!) amazes me.

I felt the actor who seemed the least comfortable was Stephen Moyer.  It may be physiological discomfort as he looked a bit pinched and thin.

Carrie Underwood, IMO, was a visual/vocal delight.  One of the twitter snarks about her was that her accent was too southern and she would not have had it in Nazi Austria.    Mary Martin did not affect a German/Austrian accent, nor did Julie Andrews (why do Americans presume that the British accent is the natural "generic" substitute for all foreign accents?).

Can she act?  It's too soon to tell.  She was not uncomfortable and she was not embarrassed.  Most of her scenes were songs, but the ones that weren't were all "the same" in presentation.  Not bothersome to me, but I'd be interested to see what she might do with more experience.  Her accent was not southern enough for it to be noticeable to me.

Seriously, everyone has seen fit to comment that Underwood can't act.  Since she's had no experience, heretofore, the jury is still out on whether she can act.  I think the salient point is that she is enormously popular and she's a physical match for Maria Rainer.  And, in some strange way I can't quite put my finger on, I think her being cast had an awful lot to do with the production having been realized.  I loved the fleshed out characters for the Baroness and Max, and I thought both actors did a splendid job with their roles.  Audra was a fierce Mother Abbess.

I found it a mostly enjoyable experience, and the set design/execution was wonderful for a controlled environment.

All of that said, I have to say I found the children a bit cloying.   In the background piece that aired on NBC last week, the search for the right children was predicated upon finding natural actors who would not seem like theater brats.

Perhaps it's just the way the Von Trapp children were written, but there was enough mugging going on and cutesy-poo stuff to make me want to fwow up.

When they sang, however, they shone like the noon sun!

I am enjoying all the SOM comments this morning.  Much more articulate here than on Twitter at #TheSoundofMusicLive...

I thought the Live Version of Sound of Music was very good.

I also think it takes a lot of courage to perform live on TV.

Also, I think all of the children did very well, and all the girls were darling!

Carrie Underwood performed great.

Last night I watched:

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS ( I LOVED IT)    I will probably watch it again just to take in all of the beautiful scenery. Rate 9/10

BLUE VALENTINE:  I  thought it was very good, but of course incredibly sad.  RATE 8/10

Do any DR'S have on thoughts on the above?

I've heard Blue Valentine is very intense , so I haven't watched it. Loved Midnight in Paris.

Since we're bound to get at least a little mix or snow or something tonight, I decided today was the day to get the snow tires put on, so I'm about to go across the road from the cows and get that done.

OK, I've spent enough time reading the Sound of Music post-mortems and now must, must, must take a basement walk.  I did NOT like what the doctor's office scale said yesterday!

When I step on it, my doctor's scale screams, "One at a time, please.  There's no value to me weighing two of you at once."

Sounds like the ratings for Sound of Music were quite stellar, and with so little promotion.

the number of inches forcast is less

Good news!

Our world turned white leaving behind a light dusting of snow.  The sun came out and melted it.  I somehow doubt that was our upcoming storm.

At least on the route  that I traveled, driving across the country with the Dear Dog, who was a mighty good sport about the whole thing, the farms in Wisconsin were the most picturesque - at least, that I saw.

Is that where you took the beautiful photo?

  • Because I can!

For the most part, I enjoyed THE SOUND OF MUSIC broadcast.  Carrie was sweet, the vampire guy much better than I had hoped, and Frau Schneider and Max were delightful.  The one exception for me was Rolf.  I understand the actor was only in his mid-twenties, but he looked more like a pedophile than a boyfriend.

And it drove me crazy trying to figure out why I recognized the actress who was playing Frau Schmidt.  Finally, after it was over, I realized that she does a lot of the PBS Pledge Breaks at the National Level, that are then inserted into our local pledge drives.

It's 5 a.m. - and I'm up early.

Dylan's awaiting some surgery today.  it's strange not having him looking for breakfast when I'm up early.
