Back from tonight's gala opening, which was anything but. I'm not one of these people who think there are really bad audiences - because even thought they might not be as vocal you can really tell they're having a good time and usually the applause at the end proves that to be correct. But tonight's sold out crowd was just about the worst audience I've ever had the displeasure to sit with. Some read their programs throughout the entire show, some probably couldn't hear anything, some just sat there like lumps of fish, and not one number got a laugh, even the laughs that cannot fail. I hated them, each and every one, save for the four people I knew and just wanted to tell them to stay home if they don't want to be entertained by a hard-working cast, who did not let the awful energy in the air hurt their energy. Or maybe they thought they were seeing A View from the Bridge or some other show like that that this theater is known for.
