Frankly, I don't recall having that much homework...until I started college.

I didn't give a damn about algebra or geometry either, but I think that the value in taking courses like that (They were required in my high school.) is not so much learning those particular subjects, but to exercise your young mental process to think in a more abstract fashion.  That, I believe, has a useful purpose.

I definitely remember there being homework, but not which grade it started in or how much there was of it.  But I was bad at keeping up with it, including certain times when it involved something I really liked and was interested in.  I think I learned how to procrastinate on stuff like that at a very early age.  My dedication to doing homework and keeping my grades up was alarmingly similar to BK's.   :)

I don't think that certain kinds of homework (e.g. book reports, keeping up with current events, etc.) are bad.

Apparently, ChasSmith, you share a birthday with the great Karen Morrow, she of clarion voice and great comic timing.

I had no problem with homework and it is a fruitless, futile task to rant about audiences...as was said, they are all different and some are lousy, so there it is.  Brett was the best Holmes because he was not afraid to make Holmes thoroughly dislikeable at times...as at times he could be.

Today is a first FULL read thru for Achilles/Achilles Son.....which takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The director said that we will stop at 4 p.m. even if we don't get through the entire script!

AND we have a new script that is only available electronically, so we have been asked to bring our laptops with the script on it.  I don't have a laptop.....sad, I know.   So I just printed out the parts of the script that have ME in them....   Perhaps I will be sitting beside someone who will share a laptop in case I forgot a part....but I think I got it all.

I remember having a lot of homework when I was a kid.

My niece who is in grade 3 actually doesn't have too much. Her English/Math teacher gives her homework on Thursday that is due the next Thursday i think. But is only studying for spelling, reading, and math problems.  Her French teacher gives her homework on Tuesday which is due that Friday. It is French spelling test. French reading for a test, writing 4 sentences a week.

She actually had a lot more homework in grade two. But that was mainly because her teacher (French) really believed strongly in reading. She had each kid reading a lot of books a week at their own level. So my niece would have like 4 chapter books a week to read in French.

This year they have 50-50 french and English. And their French teacher has them all reading the same book (to study).  In English they are each reading at their own levels.

DR Jrand63, what's up with the script only being available electronically?  Is that just a temporary situation?

Apparently no one knows any youn people in the US because the amount of homework they are given is insane and probably quadruple what we used to get. It is hours upon hours and involves every class. As to algebra and geometry leading to abstract thinking, I think pretty abstractly and I took neither class

I know it's fruitless and futile to rant about audiences but some deserve it and I'm happy to give back to them a little of what they gave.

You are so right about the homework thing, BK!  If a kid can't have a life outside of homework, there's no balance there. Being a slave to books is only going to make them hate books. Not a good learning tool at all.

Taking a break from the encores! work to do some writing for The Man From Philadelphia, and that's finished!

I've sent my regrets for tonight's party, and I'm staying in.

I actually find the work load to be different from when I was in school. We had to read at least 40 books in freshman English class, everything from Plato's Dialogues and a novel of Dickens to both Romeo and Juliet with West Side Story. Nowadays, it seems as if the same age group, even in the advanced classes, are not required to read more than a book a month. But students today do seem to have much more science and math work than I ever remember having.
