Yes, just heard about Peter O'Toole.  Too damned soon.  But what a life.

My favorite was "The Stunt Man," but I thought he was wonderful in just about every movie he was in, even when the movie wasn't great.

I need to watch "The Stunt Man" again.  That one took a while to grow on me, but is uniquely wonderful.  Another strong favorite of mine is "The Ruling Class".

I saw O'Toole play Henry Higgins in PYGMALION. I liked him.

We've returned from Target, proud owners of 700 white lights that we now have to string on the Christmas tree - my least favorite holiday chore.

BK I agree completely  about the homework -  what always infuriated me was the major projects that  Vixter's teachers would assign over the school holidays Christmas break, winter break and spring break -

one year when we were going away I went to the teacher and  told her that we were going on vacation to Disney World  and the entire family was not going to be held hostage to a school assignment - to my surprise she actually changed the due date of the assignment to two weeks later

a few years ago Vixdad bought us a prelit tree -  which was wonderful the first 3 or 4 years - but now Vixdada gets to spend hours replacing blown bulbs that put out a string

Apparently no one knows any youn people in the US because the amount of homework they are given is insane and probably quadruple what we used to get. It is hours upon hours and involves every class. As to algebra and geometry leading to abstract thinking, I think pretty abstractly and I took neither class

Wasn't algebra and geometry a requirement in California?  It was in Washington.

In my high school we had the option of taking High School Math - and that's what I took.  I hated all that stuff - science, math - just not for me and why should I be forced to take something that's not for me - make it an elective.

I don't think that students should be required to take algebra, geometry or even a foreign language (as we had to do in WA), but there are certain subjects that should be required (e.g. English & literature, math, a basic science, such as Biology, American history and current events).  Beyond that, there can be electives.

High school is there to prepare kids for "the world," and as teenagers we are not always the best ones to decide what we need to know.  The more we learn, the better choices we can make for ourselves later.

Re audiences:
I do not woo-hoo. I am a quiet person who prefers the old-fashioned approach of applause and the occasional well-deserved standing ovation.  I feel that woo-hooing is better suited to football games than to the theatre. Unfortunately, boisterous behavior has become so common that anything less may be construed as a lack of appreciation. For me, it is not. I simply show my appreciation a little more quietly.

Bruce, you knew from an early age exactly what you wanted to do in life--and you did it. Most high school kids don't really know yet and, as Druxy pointed out, may not be good judges. You didn't need academics to follow your dream, but for many careers they are essential. Going to lots of movies and plays, as you did, was an education of sorts for your career, which is quite different from hanging out at the mall or being idle. I'm a big believer in education, but I do feel it needs to be geared to the student. I'm very grateful for my own education.
