We drove past this house in Franklin, OH, on our way home tonight.  We'd seen it before from a distance, but had to see it up close.  This cell phone photo doesn't really do it justice, but you get the idea...

I miss seeing beautifully decorated homes.

I do, too.  They're out there, I know.  But the element I really miss about them is the extravagant eco-unfriendly use of traditional incandescent lighting.  Most of the decorated & lit-up houses I see now lack a brightness and warmth.

The other night I passed a house and was on the verge of being impressed with their very extensive lighting design ... but it didn't quite make it.  These tiny LED lights do not provide a glow or cast much light, and there's a lack of warmth to the colors, so while they had many hundreds of them all over house and yard, and the design was great, it registered as "dark" and "cold".  Quotation marks deliberate.  I don't want to exaggerate or condemn.  It was a great display.  But that same display using traditional Christmas lights and running up a huge bill would have put that house on the map.

The one in my photo is a little over the top for me - I prefer a more subtle look.

And of course there was nothing -- NOTHING -- that could hold a candle to the one or two houses in town that would do an elaborate display of electric trains and other such wonders.  Nothing blew us kids away like those people's houses.  More magic than ..... Disneyland!  :)

Oh believe me, I'd always have the subtle look.  That wouldn't be for me.  I just love seeing other people's extravagance on display!  :)

More thanks:

...to DR TCB for the wonderful photos of the production.  It looks really fine, and I'm sorry to hear there is no backup for archival purposes.

...to DR elmore for the wonderful stories and photos revolving around the recordings.  Great stuff.

...to BK for hosting this uniquely wonderful site.

...and to the rest of you for the shared memories and such running throughout the posts these last few days.

Thanks, DRs Jane, FJL, and ChasSmith for the vibes about Mom.  Unfortunately, I think this kind of thing is our new normal.

Good evening and an early Merry Christmas to all.

Wae-Ling came over and we watched the musical "Scrooge" on the computer. Then we attended the church Christmas Eve program and came back for a quick pancake supper.

MR BK must be entertaining his guests.  I was watching two episodes - Christmas type - of the Doris Day Show....season 2 and season 3.....entertaining and nice to see Doris and hear her sing....and she always ended the Holiday episodes speaking directly to the audience and wishing us peace and joy and much love...and Merry Christmas!!!

It is kind of strange watching the movie version of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.  A great deal of the dialogue is word for word the same.

In a few hours I will pick up Chinese food and head up to Aumsville to eat it with my mom and sister.

I didin't realize that MBarnum was Jewish!

LOL  I have never had Chinese food on Christmas, but then I was celebrating a more traditional Christmas instead of being a good Jew.  Maybe that explains why I seem to be the only Jew in my family ;)

I had Chinese food on Christmas eve tonight for the first time ever.  My aunt wasn't feeling up to cooking/preparing the food. So we had Chinese and then went back to her place for dessert/presents.

And since nobody else wanted any of the food, I got ALL the leftovers. Yeah for me!

During our drive home I called my Mom about the timetable for tomorrow and she thinks she won't feel like being here.  It's a little depressing.

Sorry. Maybe she will change her mind. :(

We have a lot of houses around here that have lots of Christmas lights. But nothing completely crazy.  I've never put up Christmas lights before. But I am really picky while driving by. Some people's lights are all crooked!

My aunt's tree was only partially decorated. So I put up the rest with my nieces.

I do hope that PBS broadcasts "Silent Night" again so I can tape it.  It's a beautiful opera, based on the film Joyeux Noël, which i've never seen. My friend Bill Burden played the German opera singer who deserts the army and runs to the French for shelter with his lover. I don't know who sang the role but her soprano was really lovely.

I knew of the famous 1914 Christmas Eve truce, but i didn't know the viciousness of the retaliation by the British, German, and French leaders for the fraternization. The first act gets the war going, sets up the three camps - Scottish, French, and German - and ends with the Christmas Eve truce. The second act covers the ugliness of the events beginning the next day and ends with the troops all sent elsewhere. The British sent the Scots to the front and a pretty much assured death.

The scenery was fluid and moved quickly from place to place. The music was interesting:very tonal with a lot of dissonance and some wonderful orchestral effects. I recommend it.

And it's Christmas in Manhattan and I'm off to bed.

Good night!
