Watch this incredible musical number with Bob Fosse and Tommy Rall - watch the way it's shot.  And then imagine how it would be shot and edited by one of today's movie directors - take note especially of the rather astonishing and impossible turn that Mr. Rall does towards the end - today, these "directors" would do ten edits within that astonishing turn, as if that somehow would make it more exciting than watching someone actually DOING the thing.  We'd also have many shots of feet and closeups and there would be no camera design - just six cameras set up so that the number can be made in the editing room.  But sorry "directors" - THIS is the way to shoot a musical number, and none of your hipster crap can make it one iota more exciting than just putting the camera down and letting two unbelievable dancers do a well choreographed number.  The End.

I liked seeing the DONNY & MARIE SHOW, especially MR BK's segments....that show certainly followed the everything-but-the-kitchen-formula.....even Charley Pride singing "Nobody"....

BK,

Continuing our "discussion" from yesterday:

1. I said that we enjoyed THE BUTLER.  I didn't say it was perfect.  The script lost its way at times and, from a dramatic standpoint, it should have ended 10 minutes before it did.

2. I think that PRISONERS is a terrific thriller.  It's right up there with MYSTIC RIVER, SEVEN and ZODIAC

Obviously, we enjoy different kinds of films.

Does that make either one of us wrong or a bad person?

Sunday morning greetings!  Disappointing showings from both college football teams we watched yesterday, but it was fun to be with Rob and Mary Linda for the Belk Bowl and to go out for Mexican food for dinner.  Stayed up for the entire Michigan game, but fell asleep during the 3rd quarter.  When I woke up, it was in the last 3 minutes and Kansas State had just pulled ahead by 24 points.  I went to bed without even seeing them kick the extra point and, apparently, missed Michigan's only touchdown and 2-point conversion.  Too little, way too late...

Anyway, as planned, I slept in this morning and have baked an apple pie and decorated the shortbread cut-outs that I made yesterday.  We'll add a half-gallon of vanilla frozen yogurt and that's our dessert contribution to DN Lauren's Palmer family holiday gathering this evening.

I have received a  copy of the Bernard Herrmann CHRISTMAS CAROL and A CHILD IS BORN, which I did not order (but I truly love).  Would anyone here like to take responsibility for this gift?

Last night I remembered I had a two-DVD set from 2008 that includes both THE UNDEFEATED and NORTH TO ALASKA.

I watched THE UNDEFEATED which I haven't seen since we saw it at the drive in over 40 years ago.  It's a fun movie....and Wayne and Hudson are really great together.....   NORTH TO ALASKA is a special favorite, so I will save it for another evening this week.

Greetings from Buffalo/Niagara International Airport.  I'm hoping the rain will hold out till after the flight takes off.  I don't think I'll be lucky in that regard when approaching Baltimore, though.  When I checked earlier there was a 100% chance of rain in the early afternoon.

I took the morning off church, for many reasons - all of which I don't need to re-hash here.  So the DD and I went to the nearby donut place and brought my mom and sister and brother-in-law breakfast and we walked over there and had an impromptu Sunday breakfast.  I wish I could do that every Sunday.

Tomorrow, it's off to Disneyland at 6:00am.  Get me the hell out of this place!

LOL - if you could wave over Ohio, you'd be way off course, DR KevinH!  Have a smooth flight!

Been a weirdly quiet Sunday here.  Not unpleasant, and I did get a few things done that were on my list.  Have to decide on a good thing or two to watch this evening.

Druxy, no, neither of us is wrong, although I'm right :)  It's what makes horse racing, of course.  You like what you like and I dislike what I dislike and never the Mark Twain shall meet.

When I watched the Donny and Marie sketch, which I don't think I'd really seen since we did it, I only remembered the accent bit.  Had no memory of "borrowing" the chair bit, but since no one had seen Nudie Musical outside of a few FANatics at that point, and since the Donny and Marie audience would never be seeing it, we obviously thought it was okay to steal from ourselves :)  My memory of that first show is that they wrote something for us that we didn't like so I quickly came up with that sketch.

Yesterday I picked up that 2-disc NBC "Sound of Music" CD at Walmart, and am delighted to find that the bonus disc of orchestral tracks is really just that, no dumbing-down nonsense added to help people "sing along".  What a pleasure to get a closer listen to what seems to be pretty much the film orchestrations --something I haven't sat down and compared and tried to figure out in detail yet.  Too bad it's only the nine "main" songs.  But hey, we take what we can get.

The Donny and Marie sketches are a treasure, not only for seeing BK and CW doing what they did so well, but as yet another time capsule view of how amazing mainstream TV used to be.

Okay, I guess I need to order that copy of FISTFUL.  I've only ever seen the US DVDs and Blu-rays.  I'm sad I never went to these when they first played.

BK, is this one from the UK or Italy or what?

We seem to be having a little Page Two problem here ..... namely, that we're on it.
