Peter Filichia goes through a Bernstein/Laurents letter to Jerome Robbins outlining the first draft of WSS.

West Side Story First Draft

Interesting...that really is a different version.

We were sent home early from the office. Some are upset that they waited so long (they made the decision at 3:15!) We may be closed tomorrow as well. They are predicting 8 to 14 inches of snow in NYC. Of course, people have entered stupid phase and the stores are mobbed and the shelves are empty.

I don't know from film music, I'll be the first to admit it. Most often, I don't even really notice the scoring when I am watching a film - which is, I suppose, part of the point, when it is skillfully done.

Which is why I was so startled the other night, when we watched the film Silkwood for the first time. I noticed the music, all right - but not in a good way. I didn't like the music, didn't feel like it was creating the right mood for what I was watching, and in fact, it took me out of the film experience and made me notice it each time it appeared. I can't recall ever having that reaction before to any film. I looked up the composer afterward - Georges Delerue. I know he is a well-known and respected film composer, so I was just really surprised. And of course, I speak only for myself and my experience with this one film. Perhaps if I had seen it a different day, I would have had a different reaction. It was, in keeping with today's topic title, odd.

Nothing wrong is saying one doesn't connect with a composer's music. I don't much care for Delerue's film scores either.

Definitely bacon (grilled) and egg (fried) with toast. My absolute favorite breakfast which I've had most days throughout my life!

Thanks DR Singdaw.  Now if only I would hear back from the library so I can read my two eBooks before they expire.  One would be a disappointment while the other I need for my book group.  I would hate to have to buy a copy.

From DR George:

Whew!!  Luckily, I haven't lost mine.  I don't know what I'd do.

LOL I was rather panicked.  Keith couldn't believe I rushed down to get it instead of waiting until today, and then leaving even before I knew if they found it.

I got locked out last evening.  Fearing that it was my WIFI, I turned off the computer and went to bed.  Now I see that we were down for a little while at about the same time.  Hopefully that was the reason.

When I first began to read this for some reason I thought you meant your apartment.  I'm glad it was only the site.

(Must be made with Hellmans)

On the West Coast it is called Best Foods.

The first time in New Jersey I went shopping for Best Foods I was rather confused.  Fortunately the label looking the same was a big clue.

For anyone who may not know, they're the same thing.  It's Best Foods in the western U.S., Hellman's in the east.

And I wouldn't have any other mayonnaise.  No sirree.  Absolutely the best.  Been buying these since someone introduced me to Hellman's in Cleveland, ca-1970.  I kid you not.  Bunch of college kids, and one actually introduces me to a particular brand of mayonnaise.

EDIT:  Which, I think we can all agree, is ODD.

I don't think it is odd at all.  You immediately agreed it was the best, and it is.  That is until I tried Craig's vegan brand.  I was surprised it was even better.  I would buy it except I use so little these days even the smallest jar often needs replacing before I use it up and the vegan brand jar is too big.

Glad to learn about the good print of Il Bidone. Love all of those early Fellini films.

I like Hellman's the BEST, but it has a tendency to fall off the knife....so when I am tired of cleaning the counter, I use Miracle Whip.....which sounds very Biblical.

I'm sitting here in shock since I have never had a problem with it falling off of the knife.

TOD:

SO many possibilities. So, I'll narrow it down to kippers and eggs or my mother's ham and cheese omelet.

Georges Delerue isn't at the top of my list, either, though I did like his score for A Little Romance.

Well, the check vibes didn't work; there was nothing in the post, which arrived around 5:30, except for the soundtrack to JOSEPH ANDREWS. On some days, you bite the bear and on some days the bear bites you. We'll see how bad the fallout is tomorrow.

I love the Delerue score for KING OF HEARTS.

Suddenly missing Jimmy Durante.

Must be the ear worm of him singing "Make Someone Happy" (watched "Sleepless in Seattle" over the weekend).

Speaking of Jimmy..."It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" has arrived!

Raspberries to all the Delerue haters.   The man had a glorious melodic gift that graced many films.
