THE JOY OF RUTH CHRIS
« on: February 09, 2014, 01:11:00 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had joy and spoke of Ruth Chris, and now it is time for you to post until the joyful cows come home.  They don't want to know from Ruth Chris, believe me.

The Gidon Kremer concert last night was really wonderful. A surprise that the program was all contemporary music (well, music written since 1900), but everything was enjoyable. Packed house. The Ordway Center seats 2,200+.

Thanks to the posts yesterday, I looked it up, and was surprised to learn that I get NBC Sports, so I can watch some of the live feeds from the Olympics.

The history of Ruth's Chris Steak House and how it got its name is kind of interesting:

DRs Elmore and KevinH:

They're calling for some snow to begin late this afternoon and continuing through the night.  Not a lot -- 2 to 3 inches where I live -- but if I take the the train, I won't get back home till after 11 PM and the last few miles from the station to my house could be difficult.  So I'm going to drive down, and I'm afraid I must leave after the show in order to get back before the going gets challenging.

I'll see Kevin at the show, but I'll have to take a rain check on a get-together, which saddens me because I am in need of some pastrami and other delights.  I hope DR Elmore is feeling better, but I have to come down sometime this week to drop some stuff off with someone, so perhaps we can get together in a few days.

I seriously can't wait to hear this today -- I know it will all be good, but especially the orchestra.  The original RCA Victor LP leaves something to be desired, and I already wish this one was going to be be recorded for posterity.

It's almost impossible to believe that Sami Staitman is ONLY NOW turning fourteen.  That means she was twelve when BK took me to dinner with the Staitman clan a year and a half ago, and she seemed more like fourteen to me then.  (Disclaimer:  I'm a terrible judge of age.)

Sorry you have to go back right after the show, DR ChasSmith, but I can certainly understand why.

It snowed again last night.....just when the warmer temperatures had cleared all the streets.  It is still barely falling....I would say we got an additional 2 inches or so.

I got to meet Ruth Fertel, the Ruth of Ruth's Chris, a few times when she came to San Antonio. Funny, fiesty woman. Her business partner, Lana Duke, was renovating an old building near the train station for a second Ruth's Chris. The contract work took more than a year longer than scheduled.

At the time, Ruth was not in the best of health, so Lana and her staff threw an opening party anyway with a marching band playing "When the Saints ..." and other New Orleans favorites. Seems Ruth was of the spirit and mindset that she wanted to be there for her own wakes. She held three or four because of all the people she wanted to share one more good time with.

Good morning, all! My sleeping pattern is once again completely screwed up. I don't know how much is the bug I've got or simply the fact that I am spending most of my day in bed.  Thank you, all, for the vibes. Yesterday was not a great day, but I did watch a couple of movies and listen to some lovely music.  Today, after all of the various unpleasant things my body was dealing with, everything today seems to be settled between the top of my nose and  my neck.  I will drag out the neti pot and see if I can clean out my sinuses.

I watched Tara Road, based on a Maeve Binchy novel I would like to read, and The Jane Austen Book Club, which I liked more for the cast than the story.  My close personal friend Stephen Rea was quite wonderful in Tara Road, but I liked most of the cast/ O thought there were a couple of holes in the plot - like the ending - that the novel might clear up, depending on how closely the film follows the book.

So, I will not be near City Center today, but I hope that Drs ChasSmith and KevinH have a wonderful time. I am sorry that, after all of my work in December and January, I did not get to have a good time with the production or see friends who came in to see the show. I hope you both enjoy the production. Most impotently to both of you, get home safely.

Sunday morning greetings!  In almost 5 years of traveling to Lima on Sundays, we've had a "first" today.  We left home shortly after 7, as usual, and stopped at Panera for a loaf of whole grain bread.  As we drove through Dayton it began to snow and we began seeing a lot of state salt trucks.  Just north of Dayton, when we'd been on the road almost an hour, we had a call from the church senior warden who said it was snowing quite heavily in Lima and the decision was made to cancel.  We turned around in Tipp City (about a third of the way there), stopped at Kroger for some major shopping, and were home by 10:30.

Those salt trucks must have known something we didn't...

Thanks, DR KevinH! I'm sorry I missed you this trip, but we'll catch up on the next one. I gee you and DR ChasSmith have a good time today.

DR Ginny, another adventure on the snowy road. I wish you'd go to market for me.  I have nothing in the apartment, and I may have to call for a delivery.
