I like moments of the score. Don Stephenson was in the original production, and he's directed the show for the St Louis Muny and possibly other places.

May be why he has such a good grasp on it for this dinner theater production.

If this is what "dinner theater" can be, pass the chicken marsala and pour me another Diet Coke.

No. I thought she wasn't good and too poorly directed, but the direction over all was really bad. I found the book emotionally cold, as was the direction, the scenery truly ugly, some of the other casting problematic and I'll mention no names. I also had friends in the cast who were good, and - in some cases - underused. I also think that some of the songs were placed poorly in the libretto, like the duet for the Strauses which didn't work for me. Musically, the show sounded great, and there were some wonderful musical moments, but I felt there wasn't much of a show there.

I think the show got an undeserved boost because it was onstage at the same time the blockbuster movie was in release and gaining lots of press......

Yep . The reviews were not good. I saw it the day the reviews came out, and I thought the cast was amazingly up and energetic.

Jrand - TITANIC also won five Tonys, including Best Musical. Supposedly, the Best Musical and best Play prizes are said to be the only Tonys which almost always have a great effect on box office. (In addition to Tony Danza, of course.)

I think appearing on Rosie's show helped a little because she loved the show and talked it up quite a bit. She also had "There She Is" as well as the Strauses song on her show.

Can't remember the other nominees for best musical, except that Aida was not one of them that year.

Titanic (which won for Best Musical but Richard Jones, the director, was not nominated for a Tony); Juan Darien (Julie Taymor director); Steel Pier (Scott Ellis director); The Life (Michael Blakemore director); Walter Bobbie won the Tony for directing the revival of Chicago, which is now starring Barret FoBrenta (or something like that) as Billy Flynn

It feels like the nominators and the voters must have been at odds for the Tony. The nominators were stingy to TITANIC, but the voters gave it every award it was nominated for.

Today is Jimmy Durante's birthday.

Question: Does anybody here recall a play about Durante that was done in a Los Angeles Equity Waiver theater back in the 1970s or 80s?

I recall seeing it in a theater, I believe, on Melrose, and (I think) Al Mancini played Durante.

Anybody remember anything else (e.g. cast, playwright, year, etc.) about the show?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. CALABASH WHEREVER YOU ARE! I would be interested in learning more about this show as there has always been the family legend that my paternal grandfather (who resembled The Great Schnozzola) was related to Mr. Durante as they both came from the same area of Naples.
