Which DR can remember Miss Bette Davis' FIRST television commercial....which she did because she loved the product so much........

She was sitting on a boat swilling the stuff wearing dark glasses and looking all the world like Margaret Emery....

I'm bettin' it wasn't Pepsi!

Ahh, so Monsieur François is among us. It's Friday afternoon, where have you been?  ;)

I can't say without being a cad!! :D

Monsieur François is way too formal and makes me feel important, which I'm not!

I have been listening to Miss Spectacular -- I'm NOT that vain to think this is about me!!.... and Oh, Brother! -- Love Judy Kaye!.... and some of Your Own Thing so far, which i find pretty hard to take.... but i'm an old goat! :D

Even Leland Palmer -- BK's friend -- 's singing is... hard to take! :(

"I fear Greeks, even those bearing gifts."

And with that I leave you, more or less, for about a week. I won't be on-line much in Minnesota so I expect a boatload of posts to keep me occupied when I return in September, refreshed and recharged.

Happy Labor (free) Day very early.

Re: American's Choice.

I like someone who is married or with kids to get it.

"She is with child, it's a boy"
"She is with kids, it's twins!"

I presume "married and with kids" is too traditional for todays reality shows.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]MMMMM.......DONUTS!!!!![/move][/size]

My eldest sister is in Salt Lake City for her 40th HS reunion (boy, is she OLD!!! LOL) and just overnighted us two dozen Dunford chocolate cake donuts.  These are without a doubt the most decadently delicious chocolate donuts in the world.  If anyone can get here within the next two or three minutes, there might be one left for you.  NOT!

I don't remember Bette's first commercial, but I do recall when Eleanor Roosevelt did an ad for margerine.

Good Afternoon!

DR JMK - I just had a donut or two myself.  I stopped at Winchell's on the way back from the show last night, and picked up a few to have before I went to bed and to have this morning for breakfast/brunch.  -Although, those chocolate cake donuts sound wonderful!

If you pay attention to the 71/2 minutes of credits you will uncover ample evidence that the film is primarily hand-drawn: detailed credits for the classic hand animation chores for each character (49 folks assigned to primary characters, 19 for effects animation  and  79 folks gainfully employed as Cleanup and Inbetweeners). CGI gets a passing reference with a mere 8 names.

The score is indeed several warhorses of classical music (just like "Fantasia") with new lyrics sung by the likes of BK's very own Tammy Tappan.

Your related Wal-Mart conspiracy theory is somewhat contradicted by facts. WAL-MART did a full-court press for "Brother Bear" and is already hyping "Home on the Range", neither one of which had grosses anywhere near $100M. I suspect the anti-Eisner crowd is looking to add Wal-Mart to their Enemies List.

If you watch the Preview to "Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas" you will see what computer animated Disney Folk will look like - and it is nothing like this film.

der Brucer

It's because Disney has been ass-kissing WalMart with The Three Muskateers -- whatever the US spelling!!! -- release that WalMart returns the compliment to Disney with the way they handle the promotion of the "new" Disney dvd releases!

It's a small business world after all! :D

RE: Dawn Upshaw- Such an amazing voice, and a wonderful person to boot!  And she sings everything from Bach to Mozart, Schubert to Sondheim, Purcell to Saariaho with amazing clarity and dedication.

If you're feeling adventurous, her "White Moon" and "The Girl With the Orange Lips" are worth investigating.  Both discs are on the "classical" side, but they are quite eclectic and feature songs with various "forms" of accompaniment - chamber ensembles, guitar(s), piano, etc.

Bette Davis swore (while seated on a deck chair on a yacht) wearing black sunglasses that the new Awake! brand orange was the BEST drink that she had EVER had ... in the morning!  She had refused ALL offers of television commercials up until then (she said) but this product was just so good, she had to tell all her friends about it....  Not by telephone or by telegraph...or letter...but by compensated endorsement!

RE: Dawn Upshaw- Such an amazing voice, and a wonderful person to boot!

That she is.  When I was at Columbia Artists, I started out in a vocal division, and Dawn was our latest "acquisition."  Never a peep out of her, prima-donna wise.  And a terrific husband, too, at the time.  (I am not sure if they are still married.....but hope they are.)  Just lovely.

On the other hand, there were other singers, in other divisions, who did not have that sterling reputation.  A colleague of mine left CAMI (Columbia Artists Management Inc., in classical music lingo) to go back to being a fireman, for goodness sake, because he couldn't take the stress of whether a certain often-fired prima donna had three pillows on her hotel bed, or four.

My experience of Wal-Mart is, admittedly, rather limited.  I've seen some news stories, know they've sold guns, but most of what I know of Wal-Mart I learned from Barbara Ehrenreich's wonderful book, Nickled and Dimed.
Rough translation, Noel has never BEEN INSIDE a WalMart.

How this can bring his earlier comment that he "hates" WalMart is puzzling, regarding how can "hate" be based on anything other than personal experience.  Unless, of course, he's been carefully taught, as Ehrenreich's book appears to have done.

Prejudice.  It's not just for the radical right any more.

I expected better from you, Francois.
