I had so much corned beef I'm making it in two pots.  The first (smaller) one has about an hour to go.

http://www.history.com/news/hungry-history/corned-beef-and-cabbage-as-irish-as-spaghetti-and-meatballs

Yeah, but you can't tell people it ain't authentic. They have to go to Ireland and not be able to order it before they believe it.

I know that's meant to confuse, but if anyone is looking for stringpaw, he's "Thither".

I thought he was a Thithy.

Thanks DR BEN for the information about tablets.  I was asking because I have WIRED internet, not WIFI, so I would have to find some kind of hot spot to use a tablet.

I called my internet company and asked how I could get wifi.  They had me create a scrrenname and a password, and a few minutes later they said you now have wifi.  I asked how much it was going to cost me, and they said, "Nothing."  They said if you have internet, you can have wifi.

You know that phono cartridge I said probably should be up for replacement by now?  Of course you do.  You've thought of nothing else since I posted of it.

Well, guess what happened yesterday.  It broke!  I put a record on the turntable and found the stylus (the part with the LI'L diamond or whatever the needles are made of) BENT.  The poor little thing was turned at a right angle to the grooves!

I was actually able to nudge it back into alignment (more or less) just enough to check out this record for a minute.  It didn't play well, but I heard what I needed to hear.  And in the end, no harm done.  It had probably gone many hundreds of hours over its expected service life, and I will do some research today on what to replace it with.  It's not that I needed something new to spend money on, but let's face it, getting a new one that will probably sound fabulous will be kind of nice.

Just this morning I said to Vixdad over breakfast, "I wonder if Chas  has replaced his  phonograph cartridge yet"

To which he replied, "Why, you must remember to ask the old chap next time you see him"

Then the maid cleared away the dishes and the chauffeur brought around the Rolls

I don't know from St Patrick's Day.  Although I knew a Patrick who was born on St. Patrick's Day.

How fortuitous!      :)

Sure if he was born on January 1, his name would have been Hangover.

Happy St. Paddy's Day, all!

I've gone missing for a couple of days, partly because my lovely Irish mother was in the hospital, and there was a real fear of losing her yesterday. Happily, she made it through an emergency surgery and is in ICU for recovery. So far, so good.

BK, loved your review of THE BOOK THIEF. I will definitely see it now, thank you.

Wishing everyone a joyous and very lucky day!

Best wishes to your mother for a quick and complete recovery.

DR Vixmom I didn't realize your in-laws were on my side of the world.  The summers there are much like the summers in Alaska.  Do they also have spectacular midnight sunsets?

Why do they live there?

Vixdad's sister married in the 1970's when England was having a high unemployment  problem   Her husband was a electrician.  Vixgranny had been corresponding with a lady in Canada since the two of them were girls during WWII and the Canadian lady invited  the newly weds to visit and to look for opportunity in Canada which  was in need of skilled tradesmen.  Just around then the small farming community of Grande Prairie  discovered oil and suddenly there was building going on  like crazy and they were in need of electricians  so the newlyweds moved to Canada and became Canadian citizens and had babies (2)

The Vixdad came to  the USA and met  yours truly and decided to stay here.

Vixgranny and Vixgrandad realized that neither of their children was going to take over their restaurant  so they sold up and moved to where the grandchildren were.. (the Vixter didn't show up until  a few years later)

Are you sorry you asked?  :)

I ordered the LIL ABNER Broadway Cast CD yesterday.

DR CHAS SMITH:

The Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream about vacuuming spiders tells us that you feel that you are being manipulated by some people in your life.  Just when you think things have been talked out and repaired, it starts again.  Drop them from your email list and keep them at bay.

Thanks a lot JRand,  I had only just forgotten that dreadful dreadful dream which reminded me of a horrendous Night Gallery episode which gave me nightmares for years

Oy, what a Monday. It's like I'm dealing with the Brobdingnagians today. People of great size, at least in their own mind, and no brains.
Were they Brobdingnagian Bards?

That is one hell of a story, DR Elmore.

You will always miss these people, but VIBES you get a really good new super.

The new super is Steve's son-in-law. He's a good guy and he was just here.

DR elmore I felt so very bad for you that I couldn't respond right away.  I was terribly worried who your new super would be and am greatly relieved it will be someone who will continue to look out for you.  You will also have news of how your friends are doing.

That is sad about your super leaving. And crazy that nobody told the people upstairs about the plumbing problem. Hope it all gets resolved. !!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Of course, DR Jennifer and DR Michael Shayne are our resident experts on the weather in Canada, but I've been to both Ottawa and Montreal in summer (July) and experienced 70s and low 80s. It was starting to cool in September, whereas in DC September is still hot, so  a shorter summer than DC, but still quite ample, to my mind. But I don't like hot weather. And I'm told that British Columbia is quite temperate.

Well it is still very cold here now. But often in April it is nice. And May. June, July and August are usually fairly hot. I would say  it is 80s in July and August. And September is usually nice as well.

whereabouts are you?  The Canadian Clan live fairly northerly -  this is a sign we pass on the way to the local mall

My bathroom ceiling just collapsed. It is in my sink, my bathtub and my toilet. I cannot enter the space and I have no idea how I will deal with any emergencies.

If the lady above me had not taken a shower - the super tells me he told them not to use the tub - things might have been okay. It was her shower that finished off things.

The only good thing at the moment is that I cannot get into the tub to slash my wrists. I don't know what to do.

So . . . no one told the tenants above me about the leak and she just took a shower. My bathroom is a total shambles. I went up and spoke to her husband about the situation,we agree the plumbers are assholes, and he said that would be the end of the tub unril the plumber shows up. There's a good half-inch of water on the floor and it was pouring from the ceiling in about 10-12 places.

so shortly your downstairs neighbor should be getting an indoor rainstorm?

Well, Finian worked his magic after all. The exit music is playing and all I want to do is listen to Burton Lane melodies. May have to play the revival recording from the production that Elmore worked on.
