Here's hoping that JRand63 has some company at his rehearsal.

"Company"??  I thought he was rehearsing "Guys & Dolls"!

I answered a toll free call to a voice that sounded like a computer was speaking.  The man asked to speak to Keith and when questioned said it was about his computer.  I knew this was going to be a good one and stayed in Keith's office while he spoke to the strange & funny voice on the other end.  Not long into the conversation I heard Keith say "Oh no, that is terrifying".  After I few other responses that made me laugh Keith mentioned this was the silliest call he has received in the last two weeks and that is saying a lot.

With a quick google search Keith found the following:
Strange phone call from Microtech saying my computer has a virus.

I had a good laugh over the phone call even though the reality of what these people are doing is very annoying.

"These scammers simply play the odds.
Most people in developed countries have at least one computer in their home and the odds are very high that the computer will have a version of Windows installed.
They call random telephone numbers and present their scam. Eventually they will connect with a victim who is unknowledgeable about computers and will fall for the scam and give them their credit card information to pay for removing the so-called virus.
While they are removing the non-existent virus, they will also be downloading all of the victims personal information on the computer. They will get the victims email address book which has the information for many more potential victims to add to their call list.
This is a multi-million dollar business. The criminals are usually very well protected, since they operate from locations around the world that do not have a strong law enforcement presence. They may also have a legitimate business front that they use to process the credit card information that they collect.

The 'assoc' command displays all of the many file associations on the computer. When you run that command, the scammer will try and convince you that some of that information proves that there is a virus on the computer."

I have had somewhat similar phone calls, DR Jane. I always chew them out and tell them that they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to to trick people.

Then they hang up on me.

I have come to find out that you can buy landline phones that you are able to connect to your cell phone so that you can use a 'regular' phone handset instead of your cell phone. It is particularly nice for when you are charging your cell phone, but you want to make calls.

Just look for phones that have "link to cell" or "connect to cell" capability.

Was anyone else aware of this? Or am I just late to the game?

Speaking of current technology, I have still not gotten my Blu Ray player to work properly; it simply will not connect with my wi-fi (so that I can watch Amazon.com and Netflix movies, etc.).

I had Comcast help me and they tried; I called LG, who made the machine, and they tried to help, but finally said it was likely a defective player.

Bleh!!

So, now I need to get hold of the place I ordered it from and I know that they will want me to send it back.

I didn't know about the phones.  We have been tempted to get the gadget that turns your cell phone into a land line type of phone.

Jane, is the voice asking about your computer kind of like a high-pitched version of someone doing a bad impersonation of Charlie Chan?

I've never heard of this.  That would be pretty cool.

Saw in the news today that the idiot mayor who said that he "partly agreed" with the mind-set of the guy who shot those people at the Jewish Center the other week, has resigned.

Some of his quotes were just too ridiculous! For instance, he felt that far too much of the Federal govt was run by Jews. He pointed out Nancy Pelosi as an example, saying that she flaunted the fact that she was a Jew.

Nevermind that Nancy Pelosi is Catholic! LOL!

What a maroon!

I missed most of his comments.  I like that he had few supporters and many people who wanted him impeached.

I saw one at a department store a few months ago but it was just the receiver. But it said it was to connect to a cell phone.

Often it seems to be feast or famine when books I am waiting for become available at my eBook library.  Currently I am experiencing the biggest feast yet.
