Just read a story that Barnes & Noble will likely be closed by the end of the year. Bummer.

The WHOLE chain???

The whole chain.

Yikes!!  That's not good!  Last year (or was it the year before?), our library bought 60 Nooks to circulate to our patrons, and we recently got a grant for another 20 that we just received!

So when I ask her how she can tell them apart she says, "because it says B1 and B2 on their pajamas".

Bahahahahaha.  So I look and on their collars in small it says B1 and B2. :)

Glad you are feeling a bit better, DR JohnG.

DITTO!

Yesterday I feared I was coming down with a cold and would miss hiking on this beautiful spring day.  Half a Benadryl last night helped my allergies and I had a great morning with my group.

No way, DR John G.  No way.  Say it isn't so.

I am feeling a bit faint...

NO!  I checked the news before asking you if it was your local store and didn't see anything :(

This follows a decades-long period of expansion, moving into neighborhoods where privately-owned bookstores thrived, destroying those stores with cut-price best-sellers, and all but owning the book business.

Border's helped.  When we lived in Michigan first Border's opened a major store and then B&N.  I preferred Borders & B&N was across the street from a small book store that quickly closed down.  I did my best to support the smaller stores only supporting the larger stores for items the little ones didn't carry.

One advantage of the larger chains is gift giving.  I don't like buying gifts that can't be returned.

Oregon loves their book stores!

Yes they do, and they seem to support them as well.  We have a wonderful store in town plus at least 5 used/new book stores.

Re Barnes and Noble:  In all fairness, I do recall that pretty much this same speculation made the rounds last year as well, with the selection of stores they closed (NYC, anyone?) being particularly threatening and depressing.  But I'd sure like to hold out hope that they will persevere a bit longer...

I like your attitude :)

Small excerpt from piece by Michael Levin, author of "Shark Tank":

If anyone gives you a Barnes & Noble gift card, be sure to cash it in by the end of the year.

This may be the last year that Barnes & Noble bookstores remain open.

It’s bad news for people who love books.  It’s worse news for the next generation of readers, who may never experience buying a book in a bookstore.

B&N has been closing about 20 stores per year since 2012 and has said it will continue to do so for the next several years. But its financial position is bleak.

This follows a decades-long period of expansion, moving into neighborhoods where privately-owned bookstores thrived, destroying those stores with cut-price best-sellers, and all but owning the book business.

...

Barnes & Noble killed privately owned bookstores, and Amazon and technology are killing B&N.  It’s downright Darwinian.

Can B&N hang on through the holidays? Most likely. But sad to say, once Black Friday gives way to the 12th day of Christmas, a once-proud book chain may well have reached its final chapter.

And that would be chapter 11, of the Bankruptcy Code.

But this isn't an announcement from B and N. Have they made one?

Hmmm, maybe this will mean mom and pop book stores will return.  By the crowds at our  book sale there are still a lot of people who love books

When I first watched the GWTW, I noticed that Frances Farmer got 4 votes from the public to play Scarlett O'Hara.....so that may have been her mother, her two sisters, and her brother.....or four members of the public with good taste.

I thought Frances would have been an excellent India Wilkes.

Not an announcement, but a prediction.

The same predictors have said that both Best Buy and JC Penney would be gone by the end of 2013. They're both still here, but they are both decidedly hurting.

I was the first to predict that both Tower and Virgin would be gone within two years - I missed each by a year, but the prediction itself that they'd be gone was absolutely correct.  I don't think there' s much of a question - they are bleeding money losses.

Our Best Buy has become very untidy. I went to look at the tv selection there, and while the had plenty of TVs, only half were turned on. Some sections of the store were dimly lit, some displays had no signage, etc.

It is a good place to buy computers, and that is the only section that seems to be kept up at all, at least in the store here.

Off to a G/D rehearsal.

I misread that as an abbreviated curse instead of "Guys and Dolls."

I bought this laptop at a Best Buy here in San Antonio. It was one of many they were discontinuing and it seemed as if the whole laptop area was being downsized.

Good morning, all! Perhaps it's the rain, but I really wanted to lie in bed and listen to the rain for another hour. Instead, I'm up, and preparing for physical therapy.

Today is Sheldon Harnick's 90th birthday. What a wonderful man!

Speaking of birthdays, the vixter's looks like a major production to rival any Busby Berkley epic and I'm happy it went so well.

Yesterday, my super came in and used the last of the sheet rock he has to cover my bathroom ceiling over the tub. There's an area of about 3 square feet that is still uncovered and it will remain so till the supplies arrive, sometime between now and my death, when they will have to redo the bathroom to rent the apartment.  It took me about an hour last night to mop up the dust, wash the walls and clean the silt out of the tub and sink.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Great midweek vibes for everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ASK ELMORE DAY
What do you think of the new super?
The announcement of postponing TIME AND AGAIN at 54 Below seemed pretty darn classy, that they said in announcing it that Skip's score was near and dear to them.
http://www.broadwayworld.com/cabaret/article/54-SINGS-MERRILY-WE-ROLL-ALONG-Comes-to-54-Below-511-Replaces-TIME-AND-AGAIN-20140429#
"Unfortunately, we have to postpone indefinitely the presentation of Time and Again, a score near and dear to all of us at 54 Below," says Phil Geoffrey Bond, Director of Original Programming, 54 Below. "We couldn't find creative solutions to present the score in its best light and are postponing this until we do. We are thrilled that Merrily We Roll Along will be the latest score celebrated in our exciting '54 Sings' concert series."
"Postpone indefinitely?"  Oh no!
I almost forgot that they are filming an episode of TNT's THE LIBRARIANS here in Salem. They are just down the block. Our state capital building is standing in for the NYC library and the park across the street will be used as the outside of a Munich Germany museum.
I have never heard of this show, but I just looked it up and it stars Noah Wylie and Matt Frewer among names I don't recognize.
