DR Ginny, some of those faces look familiar, but I was thrown out had left Ohio by 1979. I wonder where that library card is now?

DR Elmore, the people standing in the back row are Charlotte, Lynn, Joanne, and Mildred.  Mary is seated next to me.  I've left out last names to protect their privacy.  You would have known all but Lynn.  I hired him to replace me when I became director shortly after you left Middletown.

Mildred looks like a very unhappy person.

I am very excited & happy Craig has changed careers and found something he loves.  Teaching elementary school should be a safe job, yet I am aware there have been far too many shootings in schools.  Who could ever have imagined this would be something to worry about.

Lots of unrealized potential there...

It keeps popping up on my Facebook page that today is the 60th birthday of a friend who died more than a year ago.  Haven't had the heart to "unfriend" her...

I haven't known what to do in the same situation, Ginny. I keep getting announcements for friends who have died, too. I guess it's a reminder. But I'd rather think of them in ways other than because their Facebook page is still active.

I do not think these are good days.  I do not believe we are a free society anymore. Freedom of thought, freedom of expression etc only apply to those who agree with the current administration.  If you have any different opinions, god forbid you should express them. You will be attacked, you will be berated and they will try to destroy you.  If you think this administration is tolerant, you aren't paying attention.  They are only tolerant of those who agree with them.

What ever happened to fighting so those who don't share your opinion still have a right to express theirs?  That's what our country was founded on and that no longer exists.  It's a sad situation.

BK, aren't you glad you asked ;)

Hear, hear!  Orwell's NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR may be here already.  I cribbed the following from litemind.com as it summarizes well what is worrisome today:

In a dark view of the future, Orwell pictured a world ruled by an authoritarian government that controls every citizen. In this world, no one escapes being watched by video cameras, which are present even inside people’s homes. But when it comes to control, there was something even more effective than the ubiquitous cameras, and that was the official language: Newspeak.

Newspeak is rigidly controlled by the government, and it’s the only language whose vocabulary gets smaller every year. In Newspeak, words that convey subversive thoughts – like “freedom” – simply don’t exist anymore. By systematically removing or distorting the meaning of words, the government takes away the tools to question its authority. Without words to exchange or perpetuate ideas, these ideas start to gradually disappear from people’s minds. Without not even being aware of it, people became completely powerless and easily controlled.

This afternoon, I had my follow up appointment and learned that the home sleep study determined definitively that I do, indeed, have sleep apnea in a mild form. My airways are blocked and my body is waking up in order to open the airway at least 15 times per hour through the night (the number goes way up from there for people who have a more severe case). In any case, it means that I wake from a night's sleep not really rested.

With this determination, the insurance company has to cover the treatment, so they issued my CPAP machine then and there, and tonight will be my first trial run with it. I know that it will take a period of adjustment to sleeping with the mask on, but I am bound and determined to stick with it and get on the program.

So this is a good outcome and good news, and I hope eventually better sleep and rest for the likes of me.

TOD  the world is not perfect today... but when was it?

I grew up in a time when race riots demolished neighborhoods, American politicians were shot, the elder brothers of my friends were taken off to Vietnam to come back maimed, some physically, some mentally   and some did not come back at all

It was a time when girls were not allowed to take shop classes or deliver newspapers, or wear trousers to school or church  no matter how deep the snow was

My parents grew up in a time when the entire world was involved with trying to kill each other (for the second time) while Germany herded people into concentration  camps  amongst other atrocities, when girls career choice was Mommy, teacher or nurse

my grandfathers  fought in the first world war...  and that Great Depression and the Flu epidemic were no barrel of laughs either  oh my grandmothers and great grandmothers  and all my  female ancestors were  prohibited  from voting

then we can go back a few more years when US  citizens were buying and selling people

or a few years earlier when they were displacing and killing the peoples who had lived here for hundreds if not thousands of years

or a few years before that when people were being burned alive or  tortured  because they differed in their opinions of how best to worship the one true God....

now my daughter lives in a world where people blow up buildings and trains and planes and shoot school children ...

All we can do is be the best  people we know how to be; treat each other with love and kindness: be generous with our praise and slow to criticize and hope that others will forgive us for the thoughtless  things we do and say  or for the things we fail to say  or to do.

Here endeth the sermon for today
