Turned on the a/c around noon.  First time this year!  And boy, did it feel good.  It was only in the mid-80s, but the upstairs would have been unlivable tonight, and what a change from what we've been having.  Tomorrow, high 80s, and NYC should be hitting 90, maybe higher.  (I know this sounds like nothing to those of you in the south and southwest.)

I think my a/c has been on for about a month.

Had a good lunch meeting, a fun work session and the piano has been tuned.

And on September 23 Criterion releases one of my favorite films!

The film that taught me the meaning of the term "a cold sweat."

Listening to One Touch of Venus. Love that dance music.

Terrible casting on that new recording: I like Errico, Victoria Clark is clueless, Brent Barrett is miscast in the Kenny Baker role and sounds as though he should play Whitelaw.

I, too, don't care for the usually wonderful Mr. Barrett on this recording. He's almost too suave or too perfect for the role.

From DR Vixmom:
Quote
I read American Gods  several years ago -- it was weird ( well it was by Neil Gaiman so that is to be expected)  but I couldn't put it down

(which really annoyed Vixdad because he had bought it for himself and I kept stealing it everytime he put it down)

Yes, I expected it to be a bit weird, and the writing to be excellent.  I really like the narrator which is why I think the book is engrossing so far.

I recently read THE SEA by John Banville, another strange book though I'm not sure it is intended to be.  I found much to like about this except the more I read the less I liked the people in the book.  I personally need to care about some of the people.

I have that on my to-read list. But then again, I have dozens of books on my to-read list.

TOD:  Funny Girl (surprise!), Love Me or Leave Me

Wow. I am totally shocked by these choices. Who'd a thunk it.

Watching the beginning of 12 Years a Slave. I may have to watch this in installments because it's really upsetting. But I like the pacing and the direction.

We watched a very strange and somewhat disturbing documentary entitled "The Last Member."  I won't spoiler the premise for any DR that may wish to watch it. But it's quite outré.

Topic of the Day:

The first three that came to mind AND I've seen these live and in person:  Hal Holbrook in "Mark Twain Tonight!," Frank Gorshin in "Say Goodnight Gracie" and Frank Ferrante in "Groucho: A Life in Revue."  All three were fantastic!

I searched Google and came across lists of biographical movies and musicals and I've seen and like these (in alphabetical order):

1776
Amadeus
Annie Get Your Gun
Assassins
Barnum
The Boy from Oz
Bugsy Malone
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Cannibal! The Musical
Catch Me If You Can (I liked both the movie and the musical)
Erin Brockovich
Evita (the stage musical)
Funny Girl
Gypsy
Hans Christian Andersen
Heart Like a Wheel (parts of this were filmed here in Olympia!)
I Love You, Phillip Morris
Jesus Christ Superstar
Julie & Julia
The King and I
The King's Speech
Midnight Express
Moneyball
Reds
The Return of Martin Guerre
Schindler's List
Side Show
The Sound of Music
Stavisky (love the score)
The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle
Sunday in the Park with George
The Three Faces of Eve
Till the Clouds Roll By (it was on TCM recently)

And finally...Val Kilmer IS Moses!

Okay, I had to look it up.  Sing, do you mean "The Final Member?"

Because if you do... :o
